St John the Forerunner – alongside angels, my favourite subject to paint. Himself sharing in the angelic nature, St John is the only human represented with wings (and the only bearded angel). A fascinating person to get to know, reconciling many (apparent) opposites: unruly yet disciplined, audacious yet humble, struggling with doubts yet having faith that moves mountains. Joining together the Old and New Testaments. Painting him is always an adventure. I loved it this time too.

If you are in Bath on Bank Holiday weekend, come and visit Bear Flat Artists Open Studios. My studio is Venue 10 this year. I will be joined by the mega-talented Karen Bates and hosts of her beautiful ceramic angels.

St Emma of Bremen – (975-1038)
Was the earliest woman known by name in the town of Bremen. A Saxon noblewoman, wife and mother. Even the "fun-fact" of her fierce temper as a young woman has come down to us. It clearly had made a lasting impression on some contemporary chronicler of her deeds.
After her husband’s death, Emma did not enter a monastery but turned to using her considerable means to helping the needy and supporting the Church. She is said to have donated money for the refurbishment of the Bremen cathedral, whose Romanesque façade is still there to be seen now. St Emma is holding a miniature Bremen cathedral in this icon, which may be misleading, as she wasn’t the foundress of the cathedral but one of the donors. Still, this is a fact well worth celebrating. She did, however, found some small parishes.
After her death, Emma was buried in Bremen cathedral. When, later her tomb was opened, her body had turned to dust, except for her right hand which remained intact. The hand she used for giving to the poor.
Although there is no record of her canonisation, St Emma has been venerated since her death. Her memory is kept on Dec 3rd.
Here is a small icon I painted for my Goddaughter Emma, who chose this saint as her patron (or perhaps matron🤔).
