It’s too hot to do much of anything this week. It’s too hot to move and we are all seeking shade. I am in the shop because it is cool and calm, but no-one is coming out shopping in this heat. It's another blow in an already difficult time for small businesses. My heart goes out to all the flower growers too who are trying to keep their businesses going in this crazy climate both literally and in the bigger world events sense.

The next maker interview in my Meet The Maker blog series is with Sam of . I have stocked Sam's beautiful botanical linoprints for many years now. I started with her Meadow Grasses prints early on as I am a bit obsessed with meadow grasses, and I have gradually added more and more of her designs. Last year, she printed some of her designs bespoke for me in different coloured inks and I hope to continue adding more of her stunning seasonal prints to the shop.

Sam is someone I haven't yet met in person, but I feel like I know her well as we love so many of the same things. It was so lovely finding out more about her favourite flowers and trees, how she started and what she is drawn to. I hope you enjoy reading more about Sam and her nature-inspired designs.

Happy Summer Solstice!

The longest day of the year and a celebration of light and abundance. These strawflowers are like sunshines to me and I started today surrounded by them at my allotment. Grateful for the earth, the plants, the harvests, the light. Today feels a bit magical and a time to just stand still for a moment like the sun and soak it all in. Have a lovely sunny solstice!

It has been a while so I thought it was a time for a very speedy 6 favourite things from the shop video. I talk fast when I'm excited sorry and also when I know I have 10 minutes before my 10 year old arrives in the shop and demands snacks! ☀️ Summer Solstice Giveaway ☀️

This Sunday is the Summer Solstice - the day the sun seems to stop and stand still, which is where the name comes from. It's the longest day of the year and the astronomical start of summer. A celebration of light, abundance and all that nature gives us at this time of year. I have teamed up with the lovely Lisa of Elsie Moss Botanical to give away her new Litha soap, candle and diffuser created especially for the solstice, alongside one of my Wooden Flower Presses, so you can capture summer in flower and in scent form. 

Traditionally, people would make flower crowns to celebrate summer solstice. I like to make pressed flower tealight holders to light and watch the glow shine through the beautiful flowers. There is so much to press at the moment - buttercups, musk mallow, birdsfoot trefoil, grasses, clover, rose petals and more. Another solstice tradition is to light fires to mirror the sun being at its peak. If you don't have a fire, lighting a candle is a great way to celebrate, or you can do both. Lisa created this beautiful blend of sharp lime, warm coriander and earthy clary sage as a soap, diffuser and candle to burn inside or outside. You can win all three in this giveaway.

The next maker in my new series of Meet The Maker blogs is the lovely Lisa of Elsie Moss Botanical. I have stocked Lisa's lovely soaps for many years now and added her bath salts and lip balms more recently too. We connected through our shared love of the seasons and nature and I love the essential oil blends she creates and the landscape-like shapes of her handmade soaps. My favourite soap is Mother Earth, a lovely blend of sweet orange, cinnamon and clove, but they are all so beautiful and natural, gentle on skin and amazing smelling.

Lisa opened her own shop in November 2024 and has grown her business so much since I first started stocking her soaps. She has recently launched new limited edition collections based on the wheel of the year. I really loved reading her answers to my questions and I hope you do too! I will be running a Summer Solstice giveaway with Lisa on Friday, so keep an eye on my posts for more details of that.

Why do you do this? A few people asked me that over the weekend? Why take this on? Why put so much time and effort into organising a local arts trail. This photo helps sum up why. I do this for the people. The conversation, the connections, the things that make us human. Sittimg in beautiful garden filled with kids playing and musicians creating beautiful music. A space of creativity and community, open to eveeyone. Standing in my shop as people walk in holding trail maps and plannng routes was the best feeling. I don't think about why i do this, i think about all the reaaons not to do this and how that has led to this disconnection we often feel. The easy option would be to hide away and slowly disappear and get a "proper" job but I am not disappearing or getting any other job. I am

The is this weekend!! You may have to walk this fast to fit it all in as there is so much to see and do. With over 100 artists and 30 venues, its our biggest trail yet! There are creative workshops happening throughout the weekend and food and drink at all the commubity venues. Grab a map from any of the main venues and have fun exploring! Here I have shared one sample route for one day of the trail. I would have loved to do more of these for each area of the trail, but these things take me ages. I may do some live ones as I explore bits of the trail myself over the weeekend. There are lots of lovely parks and woods linking up the different pockets of venues and the forecast for thw weekend is looking good. I started this arts trail to celebrate our brilliant creative community and I can't wait to see people discovering it all. Let me know which bits you visit and which new artists you discover! For the second of my Meet The Maker blogs, I chose . Her designs are some of my favourite things in my shop! Hannah's illustrations are such beautiful studies of nature full of wonderful childlike curiosity and wonder. She keeps sketch journals about Drygrange in the Scottish borders (where she lives) and the places she goes with her kids, the birds and plants they see. Her large wraparound 'A Garden For Wildlife' cards in particular are so special and designed to be kept and framed as pieces of art after they have been read.

Even though we have never met, I feel connected to her through her art and her lovely email newsletters which are like reading letters from an old friend. She hopes that her designs make people feel connected to the nature they love, and connected to the people they share her cards and paper goods with. I really think you they do! A recent survey in our area asked what people in the community wanted more of and the most common answer was more community events and spaces and reasons to gather. We all crave more connection with people and more real conversation. It's the reason why I started the BS4 arts trail 4 years ago and it's the reason why I'm launching a monthly Makers Market on my little high street, Sandy Park Road, from July onwards to showcase local artisan makers. I want to create a lovely space for people to gather, celebrate the season and feel more connected with their community. Each market will be curated with a seasonal theme, there will be creative workshops for all ages and each one will be raising money for a different charity linked to the theme. 

July's market is all about flowers and plants, garden parties, summer colours, scents and designs. There will be flowers, ceramics, jewellery, soaps and balms, cakes and art. I will be running my pressed flower tealight workshops for all ages during the day. There will be a raffle to help raise money for with each maker donating something to be won. I am so proud to know so many amazing makers who are interested in being involved and to be able to do something I believe in that I think will make a big difference to our area. BS4 is a hidden gem with a wonderful community.
