These Two Hands is 9 years old

I was supposed to post this yesterday, but it was my BS4 Makers Market day and I forgot. On 3rd October 2017, I launched my online shop with a handful of designs created by a few friends, not knowing what to expect. Slowly I started doing craft markets and adding more makers to the collection. I ran some workshops, I got to help photograph my collections rather than doing it on my garden table.

There have been many highs and lows over the past 9 years. The shop has survived a pandemic, a cost-of-living crisis and plenty of uncertain times. I have opened a physical shop on my local high street. I started a local arts trail 3 years ago and this year I launched a monthly Makers Market. I now stock the work of over 85 small makers, many of whom have become close friends. At my 50th birthday, several of the guests at my party were friends I have made since starting this beautiful business. There were definitely days when I wasn’t sure I would make it this far, but now I really hope to make it to a decade at least and maybe more.

It has been a while since I've shared some favourites from the shop. I love doing this as I can walk around the shop looking at all the gorgeous things and appreciating the golden autumn light. Its also so quick to film. No hunting in my billions of image folders for photos or finding audio. It's one take, lots of ums and too many close ups of my face, but it is instant and that is all I can manage at the moment.

I have a crazily long to-do list as do most makers and small shops at this time of year, so I am trying to hunker down and work my way through it. But every day needs a bit of fun stuff (and some movement too) so here it is. Which of today's six favourites do you like most? X

"The world is but a canvas to our imagination" - Thoreau

People often tell me when they walk into the shop that they've never seen anything like it before, and that's because a lot of it doesn't exist anywhere else. I don't talk enough about how many of my designs are made exclusively for me. I can't make most of the things in my head myself, but I've been lucky enough to find incredible makers who share my love of nature and are happy to experiment with glazes, shapes and designs until something feels just right. From Lucy Winch's autumnal Fired Earth ceramics to Jen's new heather-inspired Moorland glaze and Jonquil's snow-capped evergreen trees, these women have given me the canvas for my imagination and turned my ideas into something real.

I've shared some of my favourite These Two Hands exclusives here. Which would you choose? Naomi x

1) I asked Lindy to make me an autumnal bowl, and very specifically a crumble bowl. She played around with shapes and designs, and created these stunning oak leaf and blackberry bowls exclusively for my shop, perfect for crumbles and more!

2) Julie’s beautiful plates imprinted with fresh cow parsley have been unique to my shop for years. Every year, we wait for the cow parsley to bloom and she makes a small batch of these exclusively for me.

3) I love ferns and I have known Wendy Calder since I launched These Two Hands, so this fern dish made perfect sense when we talked about creating some exclusive designs for my shop. I love these fern imprint soap dishes so much!

4) These stunning new Moorland ceramics are inspired by heather-covered hillsides and created exclusively for my shop by lovely local potter Jen who knows how much I love landscapes.

5) Tiny earthenware trinket dishes imprinted with persicaria and meadow grasses with an ink wash in their natural colours. Helen creates these lovely dishes especially for me using flowers and grasses from her garden.

6) These new Alpine Forest ceramics were created for me by Jonquil to represent a snowy winter evergreen forest and I absolutely love

7) Last autumn, I met with Lucy Winch looking for a multilayered autumnal glaze that had an earthy warm feel and this love

What makes the BS4 Makers Market such a lovely market to run and to visit is the makers. That sounds obvious, but starting a new event meant reaching out to lots of local artists and craftspeople whose work I love and hoping they would give my new market a go. I love curating collections and gatherings, and this market has given me a chance to do that outside of the shop and with different makers who aren't part of my shop, but who feel like the perfect extension of it.

It is more than a market, it is a place to gather and connect. The local community have really supported this and people take time to chat to makers and browse every stall. It has brought people to our hidden area of Bristol which is what I hoped it would do. There is so much competing for our time and attention every day and I am so grateful for how many people choose to visit the market. At the next one on Saturday 3rd October, there are some lovely new makers joining, some beautiful locally grown flowers and produce and we are raising money for Avon Wildlife Trust. I have so much I want to share for Autumn Equinox, hundreds of beautiful autumnal photos from the past 9 years of running a shop that was born in Autumn. A shop that really comes alive in Autumn, my favourite season. A collection whose heart is always in Autumn. But I also really want to sit and listen to birds and soak in the real Autumn, celebrate it outside where I feel most at home, write my throughs on paper not on a screen. And that matters more than spending a day trying to create a carousel on here.

The photos are always there and maybe over the next week, I can try to put something together. EVery year there are so many beautiful photos I never even get to use. But one of the biggest things for me about the Equinox and all of the wheel of the year celebrations is the reminder of the circle of the seasons and the fact that these times will come again. If we don't manage it all this year, we will have many more chances to celebrate these beautiful seasons again. The light will return, the earth will keep turning. That's why I love making wreaths as they are a visual reminder if this cyclical journey and a way to capture each season.

The Autumn Equinox is a time of balance between dark and light and a good chance to look for balance in your own life between those things. It's a time to let go like the trees let go of their leaves and celebrate harvest and what you have. Preserve and prepare for colder, darker months. Light a candle, get outside, eat seasonal food. There are lots of ways to celebrate today, but it doesn't matter what you choose to do or if you don't have time to celebrate today. Nature has no deadlines to work to. The circle will keep turning and the seasons will keep moving. Enjoy the season when you can in a way that brings you joy. Happy Autumn! 🍂❤️

I have many happy childhood memories of harvest festivals growing up in a tiny village in West Sussex. Families would gather around the church where colourful fruit and veg would be stacked up around the big wooden doors and it felt like a joyful time to celebrate the season. Now, we have much less of a connection to our food, to the land and to the communities we live in, and I wanted to try and rebuild some of that connection and celebrate harvest, celebrate crafts linked to nature and celebrate this beautiful season where the earth gives so much.

When Sara Venn, founder of Edible Bristol and inspirationl food and gardening activist, passed away last summer, I wanted to do something positive. So I set up this event in her memory to raise money for the great work her son Noah continues to do with Edible Bristol growing fresh fruit and veg for food banks. She made me feel hopeful about the future, however bleak it seemed, and I want to raise money for and awareness of people doing great things in the growing community. Bristol is full of so many great growing groups, some of whom will be at the Harvest Festival, and full of great craftspeople who work with nature to preserve its beauty and make the most of its materials.

At this year's Harvest Festival, there is community banner printing with , willow bird feeder weaving with , string making from plants with WILD WALKS SOUTH WEST Cornwall,sandcasting with Issi Bulloch Jewellery. There is a book Q&A and signing with , local author of the bestselling Seasonal Almanac guide which is celebating its 10th edition and is all about rituals and gatherings like this one. There will be paper crafting, candle rolling, ink making, apple ID'ing and more. Enjoy delicious c***r and seasonal food from Dick Willows Farm and homemade tea and cakes.

Come and celebrate autumn in all its colourful glory and raise money for a great cause. Bring any gluts from your garden and allotments to share, seeds you want to donate and maybe even give your time to help one of the great community growing projects. I look forward to celebrating harvest time with you all! x

We don’t grow older, we grow riper

I love this idea by Picasso as someone who is definitely very ripe now! I celebrated turning 50 a little early last weekend with some of my favourite people in my favourite wild campsite in Somerset. We made flower crowns, ate great food, sat in the sunshine and danced until late. I started my speech with a Dolly Parton quote - I ain’t got time to get old - and it’s true. Running my beautiful shop and website, my monthly markets, my wreath workshops, and other community events keeps me very busy. I should probably do less, but I really love bringing together beautiful designs, great people, wonderful stories and traditional skills.

My 40s have been my best years yet! They are the decade in which I had my daughter and I started this beautiful business and my life changed completely. Some of the people I am closest to now, I have met in the past 10 years. You are never too old to find your people and your path, and I am so glad I have!

This Saturday I turn 50, so to celebrate and say thank you for helping my shop keep going, every order from now until Sunday night will get a little surprise gift from me. Let's autumn for a while first.... I wrote an email this morning about savouring this beautiful season rather than rushing ahead to Christmas. This is my favourite time of year and I loved collecting bits from nature to photograph with yesterday. These are some of the new autumnal designs I have added to the shop and online. I have created a new Autumn shop area filled with all the things that celebrate the season - acorns, pinecones, berries, pumpkins, apples, blackberries and more. Enjoy a slow sensory autumn!
