As I mentally try and prepare for my eldest son to leave home next week I thought I'd share a poem I wrote last year.
The moment they're born
And placed in our arms
Life changes
They are our everything
Nothing else matters
We would die for our children
They are all encompassing
Each and every day driven by their needs
It's so true that the days are long
Especially with extra needs
And when life throws those little extras our way
It can feel very heavy
The years they pass
And one day they are ready to fly the nest
But we aren't ready
We didn't see this coming and suddenly it's here
Children no longer children
But still our children
We will always be a mum
But things change
They pull away and push us away
To prepare for this ending
For their new beginning
And what's left for us?
What do we do now?
A huge hole left behind
It will be ok
It will be fine, in time
Of course we didn't see this coming
And really feel quite silly for this
Of course they won't need us like they did
Not forever
And that's what we want for them
But it hurts
It hurts so much
Our hearts are breaking
Anxiety rises
What do I do now?
When I became a mum I made a silent decision to put them first always
And now it's time to put myself first again
Exciting?
It could be
But first I need to shed those tears
Feel the pain
A separation
Change is hard
But we will be ok
Yes we will be ok
