There is nothing quite like seeing a painting settled into its new home, and my client sent me a photo of Wounded Wisdom hanging above his sideboard alongside Salus, one of my sculpted lamps- I love how it all sits together. He found both through Trove Home Collective in Broadway, along with the chair and the sideboard, and the whole space feels considered and warm and lived in, which is exactly what I hope for when a piece leaves the studio.

My paintings are available at Trove Home Collective in Broadway, so if you are nearby do go and see them in person, and you can view available work at emilymitchellart.co.uk.

Thank you for sharing your space with me.

Walking to the studio, along the cream Cotswold passages that somehow always end up as my backgrounds.

This weekend was black that’s never just black, colour torn back through it and a red line holding it all together. Two new paintings came out of it, a pair called Solve and Coagula.

Of course, there are some meaty meanings behind the names if anyone’s curious, but they’re just as content being looked at.

Full reveal next week when the framing is completed.

A cold and windy day in the studio with Freddie, who supervised from start to finish and only stopped for kisses.

Two paintings that have been living in my head for a while are ready for Edward, the framer and I’ve reworked a framed piece I thought was done. Time to@chill now, but pleased they are out 👌🏻.

So, three more to reveal next week ✨

Fulcrum and Maat. A pair.

A fulcrum is the fixed point everything else balances on. Maat was the Egyptian goddess of truth and cosmic order. At judgement, the heart of the dead was weighed against her feather.

One painting holds the mechanics of balance. The other holds its moral weight.

These came from a more spacious place than most of my work. Less noise. Black, cream, a thread of red. I let the empty ground do more of the talking.

They’re made to hang together: the black edges of the frames face each other, so the space between them becomes the pivot.

Acrylic and oil, in bespoke tray frames by E7 Art & Framing.

‘Where There Is a Dragon There Is Treasure’- has found its new home.

It’s a phrase I come back to again and again, with the people I work with clinically and with myself. The hardest places, the ones we most want to avoid, are usually where something valuable is waiting. Not always comfort, but something learned, or something found 🐉🪎.

This painting is built the same way: layers buried and scraped back, gold under the surface, colour pushing through the dark. I felt quite attached to this one.

So, I’m really pleased it’s gone to a lovely family who came back to it a few times over the weekend, looking, walking away and returning. That’s exactly how I paint. I work, stand back, walk round, and come back again until the painting tells me it’s done. Sometimes this takes weeks. It felt right that they found it the same way and I’m so glad it’s going to them. Thank you.

What a couple of days ✨

‘Out of the Fire’ has found its new home. Here it is in the studio over the summer and here it is with a red dot. It’s a strange, good feeling to watch a painting you’ve lived with walk out into someone else’s life and I’m so grateful to its new owners 🙏.

A few other pieces have sold too, but there’s still plenty on the stand, from larger oil and acrylic works to small framed studies. Each one is an original, built slowly in layers, and there won’t be another quite like it.

Two days left. Stand 33, The Other Art Fair, Truman Brewery, London. Open until Sunday 11 October. Come and say hello.
