Christinas wildflower seeds & garden plants

Christinas wildflower seeds & garden plants I have 10+ years hands-on experience in my Suffolk garden. I am not a certified professional in gardening or wildlife. See our website for further details.

I do however, deep-dive into reliable books & professional websites. The info here reflects my own experiences in my local environment. Christinas is an online mail order business. We are situated in Mildenhall, which is a little village in between Newmarket in Cambridgeshire and Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. I set up the online side of my business in early 2019 because of the COVID pandemic and I c

ould no longer sell directly to my customers. As an enthusiastic gardener, I've enjoyed the challenge of growing plants from seeds and cuttings. It wasn't long before I had too many seeds and cuttings and no where to put them, so I started to give them away to family, friends and neighbours. It didn't take long to move on to selling seeds in micro packages, and that is when Christina's Seeds and Plants business was born. As I grow as a business I will be adding carefully selected species of seeds and plants that are great for pollinators. We hand pack all the seeds in paper envelopes, and detailed growing advice can be found on each product page within our website. The wildflowers sold through out website come originally from stock grown in the UK. The seed is packed, mixed and distributed in the UK only. This way you can be confident that you are buying native UK Wild Flower Seed. https://www.christinas.co.uk

We have just enjoyed a week at the rewilding project - Knepp in Sussex. 16 miles of walks to see storks, deer, tamworth pigs, longhorn cattle and lots and lots of birds. Weather wasn't great so didn't see many insects. If you like glamping or camping then it's a great place to stay, I'd put their cabins within the glamping criteria. If you prefer a cottage, then book with a holiday cottage company and stay just outside of Knepp.

More flowers opening.

Now the Cherry Laurels are out, we have added Red Robins, Flamingo Willow and Privet, which will all be trained into small trees - these are to help with privacy and they also attract insects and birds. A variegated ivy, as well as letting ivy grow that naturally appears in our garden which is the best for attracting lots of wildlife, along with Butterfly attracting climbing Jasmines. It's a young planted area and will probably take three years before it really starts to look full of plants.

I could cut in grass/border edging, the wren always enjoys it. It makes the garden look smarter, but to have that wilder look means letting the flowers spill over the grass - plus less work.

Not so lush and forest like this year:

The fence side was set up to look like the edge of a woodland, moving into a wildflower meadow. This worked really well, until the neighbour took it open themselves to remove all the silver birch trees that ran along the side of both of our properties in a public space (as it turns out I'm allergic to these trees, so it was a major relief to my body once they were gone). We also removed all the Cherry Laurels (which I'm also allergic to - another great relief they are gone). But doing it by hand and dragging heavy rootballs across the meadow area caused a lot of damage, so the meadow is looking terrible as well, mainly sandy mud. Because of this, the woodland area is now baked by sun from early morning until mid-day. The Foxgloves are crispy stumps, and the shaded border seedlings died a painful death weeks ago. Even the buddleja has suffered and been cut right back, but are staring to regrow and should fill the gaps nicely. I'm looking forward to replanning this area, to benefit wildlife.

Right now the garden is pretty much having to start all over again, simply because of the number of trees that have been removed that surround us. Before the garden was hot and dry, now it's even worse - we can't even go out there on heatwave days. So I'm going to have to create borders with plants in close proximity together and add more trees, or structures to give some much needed shade. Thankfully the majority of the wildflowers do great in hot sun, but not so great (poppies) when they are weighted down by heavy downpours of rain.

We finally had rain and the garden looks so much better for it. It's got that perfect wild look to it that I personally love. But for those of you who prefer a garden that looks like a work of art. Here is a favourite of mine, they don't do much for wildlife as far as I know, but I do love looking at them.

Here is a small blue butterfly (Holly Blue) sitting on a buddleja. These arrive early in the year, disappear for a while, and then arrive in greater numbers a month later.

We have had a few Hummingbird Hawk Moths in the garden over the last week. We usually don't spot them until the Buddleja or Verbena are flowering. Putting the Valarian in has proved it's worth already as it flowers early, and is covered in moths during the night, and butterflies and bees during the day.
