"✨ A Beautiful Flooring Transformation in Central Cambridge ✨

Shuo visited our showroom back in July looking for the perfect flooring for her new home, with a project covering the ground floor, stairs, landing and four bedrooms.

After exploring the options in our showroom, we narrowed the choices down to a shortlist. Darren then took display boards along to the home survey so Shuo could see how the colours looked in her own lighting. It’s an important step, as lighting can make a real difference to the warmth and appearance of a floor!

The final choice was the stunning Almond wide plank from Ted Todd, creating a beautiful, light and warm feel throughout the home. 🤍

Preparation was key, with several days spent getting the subfloors ready before our expert fitters, John and Karl, got to work. New skirting boards were installed, and the stairs were finished with bespoke, colour-matched nosings for a seamless look.

For the ground-floor cloakroom, Shuo chose something a little different, opting for the Lattice design in Per Tree from Harvey Maria — a practical flooring solution with plenty of character.

Another fantastic transformation, combining carefully chosen materials, expert preparation and quality craftsmanship. 👌

𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁: “I’𝙙 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙇𝙑𝙏, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙨𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙞𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙗𝙞𝙩𝙨?”

It’s a fair worry, and it usually comes from someone who’s seen a cheap vinyl floor go dull and marked within a year.

But not all LVT is built the same. The difference is mostly in the wear layer, the clear protective surface on top. On a budget product, it can be very thin. On a well-specified one, it’s considerably tougher, and it’s what stands between your floor and the dog’s claws, the dining chairs and the Lego.

It won’t make a floor scratch-proof. Grit from outside will still mark it, which is why a good doormat matters. But a properly chosen LVT copes with family life far better than its reputation suggests.

"Katie and Nial came to our showroom wanting to replace the living room carpet with a hard floor, something practical that still looked beautiful.

They compared Luxury Vinyl Tile and engineered wood side by side, and once they'd seen and felt the real thing, their hearts were set on wood. They chose Tattenhall, a wide plank engineered oak from Ted Todd.

A floor like this is only as good as what's underneath it. We started with full preparation: a damp proof barrier, then smoothing compounds to give a flat, sound base. That way the floor will perform well for years, not just look good on day one.

We didn't take the skirting boards off, because removing them can damage the walls. Instead we left them in place and undercut them so the boards slide neatly beneath, giving a clean finish. Where the room steps down into the hallway, we made and fitted a bespoke ramp.

The finished floor has completely changed how the room feels. Katie and Nial are thrilled, and we think it looks superb.

𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻.

Scratches first. Most marks on hard floors don’t actually come from claws. They come from grit carried in on shoes and paws, then ground in underfoot. A proper mat at every outside door and felt pads under the dining chairs will do more for your floor than almost any upgrade.

Water next. “Water-resistant” and “waterproof” get used loosely. LVT copes very well with everyday spills, but water left standing around the edges or at a back door threshold is a different story. Engineered wood needs spills wiped up promptly, especially around the dog’s bowl.

Then cleaning. Be honest about how much of it you’ll really do. Carpet in a family lounge needs regular hoovering and the odd spot clean. Hard floors want sweeping or vacuuming before any mop goes near them, otherwise you’re just pushing grit around. And steam mops aren’t suitable for every floor, so check the manufacturer’s guidance first.

None of this is complicated. But knowing it before you choose saves a lot of disappointment later.

Most durable floor for kids and pets? The honest answer starts with a different question.

We get asked this most weeks in the Cambridge showroom. And the honest answer is that “durable” means something different in every room.

Take the kitchen. Spilt juice, a water bowl knocked over, chairs scraping back at every meal. Here you need something that copes with water and wipes clean in seconds, which is why LVT earns its place in so many family kitchens.

Then the hallway. School shoes, muddy trainers, a dog back from a wet walk on Midsummer Common. Grit is the real problem here, because it acts like sandpaper on almost any surface.

And the lounge, where everyone actually sits down. A good cut-pile carpet in a stain-resistant fibre handles far more family life than people expect, and it’s a lot kinder to small knees.

🧐When a leak damaged the engineered wood floor in Lizzie and Ronnie's kitchen, they weren't sure who to call. Most firms would have quoted to replace the whole floor.

Our fitters took the slower route. They lifted only the damaged boards, sourced matching replacements and fitted them so they blend in with the original floor.

Repairs like this aren't something we take on often. When we do, it's because they test exactly what our team is best at: precision, patience and an eye for detail.
