An Early 18th Century Dutch Decorated Kakiemon Style Saucer Dish, Jingdezhen Kilns, the Dutch decoration possibly added in Delft, c.1724-1730. The dish was commissioned by the V.O.C. as a white porcelain too be painted in Europe, indeed many V.O.C. cargos included blanks to be decorated in the Netherlands. This dish has a very rare feature, the foot was pierced twice before glazing. Dutch Delft dishes often have these holes next to each other in the foot, they were used for hanging the dishes up.

A London Decorated Chinese Export Porcelain Teapot Stand, Made at Jingdezhen c.1755-1765, Enamelled in London between c.1757-1765.

This blank silver shaped Chinese export porcelain teapot stand was probably decorated by James Giles’s studio. The design is influenced by contemporary Meissen porcelain, it includes a bouquet of garden flowers including roses as well as a caterpillar and a butterfly. All the decoration was added in London, probably at James Giles’s studio in either Kentish Town or Berwick Street, Soho between c.1755-1765.

See website for more photographs and references.

Condition
Like most teapot stands, this example has some rim chips and fritting. The central decoration id in very good condition.

A Kangxi Blue and White Porcelain Plate c.1690-1710.

The central design is of two Ladies, or ‘Long Eliza` (Lange Lyzen in Dutch), in a garden landscape, the scene is set in a garden. An elegant lady stands holding a small, branched twig, perhaps acacia, the two other ladies stand nearby with a light (?) over her shoulder. This plate is unusual in that the design fills the plate, stopping just short of the rim, it is far more common to have a complex border, rather than with this plate, a simple single line, just before the rim. This very shallow plate is based on European metal and ceramic shapes. Many Dutch late 17th century and early 18th century delftware plates and dishes are of this shape or versions of it. Some of the delftware dishes have the design across the surface of the plate, like the present example. These designs moved to and from East to West and back again, this makes sorting out which design elements came first, rather difficult.

Condition
In very good condition, minor rim frit to the edge at the back.

Size 21.3cm (8.4 inches).

A Wanli Kraak Porcelain Klapmuts Bowl, Wanli (1573-1620) c.1590 – 1610, Jingdezhen Kilns.

This shallow Ming klapmuts from the Wanli period, is decorated with a bright, rather clear cobalt blue. The design on the everted rim is unusual for Kraak porcelain, it consists of a repeated flower and rock design, without the interruption of borders. The central design in the well is typical of Kraak ware, with a bird on a rock among peony and other plants. The moulded cavetto has pointed oval panels with precious objects. The back similarly decorated, the base has a partly visible European inscription.
“In the past scholars postulated various theories concerning the origins of the word Kraak, which came to be commonly used in the West in the twentieth century. The earliest textual evidence known thus far of the use of the term ‘carracke’ refers to dishes which, in all probability, were Kraak porcelain dates to 1596. An ECA Orhans Court inventory from Exeter, England, dating to November of that year mentions that the apothecary Thomas Baskerville left ‘6 Carracke’ dishes.” Teresa Canape (see References).

Condition
Minor rim fritting, allot of which is tinged with orange, showing the fritting happens in the firing. Iron tends to migrate to unglazed edges during the firing process.

Size
Diameter : 22.7 cm (9 inches). Depth : 5.8 cm (2 1/3 inches).

Provenance
A Dutch Private Collection.

An 17th century Blanc de Chine Porcelain ‘Libation Cup’, Dehua kilns, Fujian Province, late Ming to Kangxi period c.1640-1700.

Blanc de Chine cups of this type have been traditionally referred to as Libation Cups but in truth they were probably wine cups. The shape follows that of Chinese rhinoceros horn cups which were made locally. It is interesting baring in mind the important powers that the Chinese attach to this material, that by using a Blanc de Chine porcelain cup of this form some of the powers of real rhinoceros horn might be conveyed to the drinker.

Condition
A minute frit to the rim, perhaps less than 1mm.

Size
Length : 8.5 cm (3 1/2 inches) Height 5.3 cm (2.1 inches).

A Pair of Rare Kangxi Blanc de Chine Porcelain Figures, Dehua Kilns, Fujian Province c.1680-1720.

Robert McPherson Antiques.

These unusual Kangxi porcelain figure probably depict Daoist gods, one is Zhenwu in his armour standing on a turtle with a snake, the turtle is inscribed between his feet with a single character. The other figure also in military uniform stands on a turtle which has the same inscription on its back, however there is no snake. The figure on the right matches one at Blenheim Palace, part of the Blenheim Palace Collection.
