Here at RK Design we look to identify the clients’ need and then use a practical design approach to provide logical and intricate solutions to help the client realise their end goal. Enroute to this goal we will offer advice on how the use of materials and systems can create and flexible and sustainable design. Developing the design with the client is crucial so that the end goal is achieved howev

er once the design is confirmed statutory bodies will need consulting in pursuit of approval. The main bodies in this process will be the Local Authority Planning Department and a Building Control Company. Put simply the Planning Department will approve the design based on aesthetics, massing and its impact on the surrounding environment where Building Control will approve the more technical design confirming the construction will adhere to current regulations, for example, the projects structural integrity, thermal performance and fire safety. As an architectural design, we have the expertise and knowledge to ensure the design meets planning policies and building regulations to obtain the approvals. It is recommended to use the services of an architectural designer in these earlier design stages to ensure the end product achieved matches the initial brief. The architectural designer will produce a concise package for a Contractor to tender from. Some clients are happy to manage the construction of the project themselves or leave it to the Contractor, in either case, it is highly recommended that a contract is drafted between the client and the Contractor for the Contracted Works. We can provide a service during this process ensuring a number of tenders from reputable building contractors is obtained, a schedule of works is drafted, an appropriate contract is sourced and signed. During the project site visits will monitor the build progress in relation to the schedule and any quality issues, the findings will be reported. Being the first point of call between the building contractor and client can take a large burden off a client. Located in the town of Cannock and operating within the Staffordshire County RK Design can provide services for many local areas including Walsall, Wolverhampton, Stafford, North Birmingham, Lichfield and Tamworth. We are never tied down to a specific area so if we havn’t mentioned where you live then don’t be afraid to give us a bell and see if we can help with your query.

Turning vision into reality. 🏡

We’re replacing an old conservatory with a 9sqm extension designed under permitted development. We are currently refining the design—prioritizing a flat roof to maintain first-floor clearance—while carefully monitoring glazing levels and thermal performance to ensure we meet all building regulation standards. Stay tuned for progress updates! ✍🏼

Design Confirmed & Submitted! 🥂📐

Exciting milestone for our project at 187 Hill Street, Hednesford. After working closely with the client to refine their vision, we have officially submitted the plans for this detached refurbishment.

This project is a masterclass in making a home work harder. By extending the ground floor, we’ve created a massive social hub that interacts perfectly with the garden. We’ve also been strategic with the "hidden" areas—converting underused garage space into a utility and a much-needed extra shower room.

Key Design Highlights:

✨ Light-Filled Living: Rooflights and large openings to maximize natural light.

✨ The 'Office' Win: A multi-functional space that can easily transition into a ground-floor bedroom.

✨ Upstairs Versatility: A first-floor side extension designed to be flexible—offering the family the choice to split or merge rooms as their needs change.

Architecture isn't just about adding space; it’s about adding options. We can’t wait to get started on the technical phase!

Architecture is about solving today’s problems while planning for tomorrow’s needs.

For , the goal was simple: create more breathing room. By extending 16sqm into the rear, we’ve unlocked a new kitchen-diner layout and a sun-drenched lounge.

To keep the addition feeling like a natural part of the home, we’ve proposed a catslide roof design. This allows the new pitched roof to merge gracefully with the existing structure, avoiding a "bolted-on" look.

The real magic, however, is in the "shift." To navigate a tapered boundary and a significant 2m height difference, we’ve repositioned the structure to keep the build efficient and avoid heavy retaining walls. This ensures the home remains fully accessible and future-proofed for our clients.

New Project: Project1965 🏠

We’re kicking off an exciting transformation in Hednesford! This 1960s property at Priory Road is about to get a major functional upgrade, balancing modern space creation with smart site management.

The strategy begins with a "less is more" approach: we’re partially demolishing the existing, underused garage. By removing the storage space that was no longer serving the family, we’ve prioritized maintaining vital side access from front to back—a must-have for a busy household.

The centerpiece is the new ~20sqm rear extension. Beyond creating a light-filled open-plan kitchen and diner, our design tackles the site’s significant rear slope. We’re creating a tiered transition from the new French doors into the garden, turning a topography challenge into a stunning architectural feature. 🌿

We’re currently exploring two internal layout options. While both include the open-plan zone and the necessary ground floor WC, we are testing different configurations for the utility and circulation to find the perfect fit for the client's lifestyle.

The transformation is in full swing at 🏗️

We’ve officially hit that pivotal stage where the "bones" of the build are coming together. From completing the rear roof to getting the side extension up to wall plate, the structure is feeling solid and secure.

It’s not just about the exterior, though. Inside, we’re focusing on the details that make a house a home:
Thermal Efficiency: New insulation and screeded floors to keep things cozy.

Structure: Timber stud work is finally defining the flow of the rooms.

Security: Windows and doors are in, making the site watertight and ready for the next phase.
Every day brings us a step closer to the final vision of a high-performance, accessible space.

We are thrilled to announce our latest appointment! We’ve stepped in to lead the Technical Design and Tender phases for a significant GP Practice expansion (Planning Ref: CH/24/331).

Taking over from the initial planning stages, our mission is to fast-track this project toward construction. The clock is ticking—the Practice needs a robust tender submission for the ICB by the end of March 2026.

Our focus:
✅ 50sqm Single storey front extension & reconfiguration.
✅ 53sqm First floor rear extension.
✅ Integrated hard and soft landscaping for improved parking.
✅ Comprehensive RIBA Stage 4 construction package.

By delivering high-level technical details and strategic PC Sums, we’re ensuring contractors can provide accurate quotes within this tight timeframe without compromising on quality.

Stay tuned as we move from the drawing board to the build!

Back on the drawing board in Hednesford. ✍️🧱

We’re excited to introduce our latest project at 187 Hill Street. This is a classic case of a growing family needing their home to work harder for them. The goal is a total refurbishment and extension that balances high-energy social spaces with the quiet privacy of 4/5 dedicated bedrooms.

Adding 70sqm across two floors is the easy part. The real work lies in the constraints:

🔹 Retaining the existing garage footprint while integrating a utility and office behind it.

🔹 Achieving a 4/5B6P (4/5 Bedroom, 6 Person) layout within the new footprint.

🔹 Designing a cohesive pitched roofline that ties the entire detached structure together.

We’re currently refining the layouts to make sure every square meter serves a purpose.

Watch this space—design reveals coming soon!

New Project: Extending in Hednesford 🏠✨

We’ve just kicked off a brand-new project at Chalcot Drive! Our brief is to breathe new life into this property with a 16sqm ground-floor side extension.

The goal? To create a spacious, dedicated dining room that feels like it was always part of the house. The standout feature will be a beautiful bow window, designed to pull in light and provide a stunning focal point for the room.

From reconfiguring the internal flow to executing the final build, we can’t wait to see this one come to life.
Stay tuned for progress updates! 🛠️
