🌸 Closing down sale of undyed fabric 🌸

Before I close down my ribbons page (to go in other directions), I’d like to find a home for the remaining undyed silk fabric I have in stock, as it’s just too stunningly beautiful to waste.

✏️ If anyone can make use of it (or knows someone who can) please get in touch, I’m offering it all at a significant reduction in the hope it can be put to good use. Details below, cost of shipping will be additional to these costs and I’m happy to provide a quote for that:

Charmeuse H**p Silk from The H**p Shop
7 metres x 142cm width. Wholesale cost would be around £200, selling for £90

Chinese Chiffon from Pongees Silks
10m x 61cm width = Wholesale cost would be around £140, selling for £60

Viscose / Silk velvet Pongees Silks
10m x 84cm width = Wholesale cost would be around £120, selling for £50

The fabric is all in perfect condition aside from a few creases, which will easily iron out. I can provide any details required, just ask.

Wedding cake 🎂🍰

The history and symbolism of the wedding cake appears to have lots of strange rituals.

A very early example of a wedding cake was a simple cake made form wheat or barley which would be broken over the brides heads to bring good fortune. 🤔

Personally I dont think there's much good fortune in a head full of crumbs.😂

Mind you, I quite like the superstition where bridesmaids would put a piece of cake under their pillow to encourage dreams of their future husbands. Not because I believe in any sort of superstition, only that waking in the morning to find a piece of cake to accompany your morning cuppa seems like a great post-celebration pick me up. 😃😋

July is plastic free month.

At Humming B Ribbons actually every month is plastic free!!

All of the packaging that you receive your ribbons in is recyclable, reusable and/or compostable. ♻️

We're all about keeping it natural, and plastic is about as far from natural as I can imagine, so removing reliance on single use plastics is high on my agenda.

July is a busy wedding month but in this household it’s also a month when my thoughts turn to 🎁 birthdays 🎁, with a number of close friends sharing birthdays at this time of year…..and my own at the end of the month 😝

As the years pass the celebrations get quieter but it’s still a joy to show you care with some pretty little details. 🎀

'Tying the knot'?

Did you know that this expression originates from an ancient Celtic ceremony called Handfasting? Couples tie their hands together using lengths of ribbon, cord or cloth to signify binding their two lives together.

This wedding practice is still in use today in some cultures and by couples that love a little tradition in their ceremony.

You can choose a combination of coloured ribbons to fit your chosen theme or add more meaning by choosing colours to symbolise certain strengths or emotions.

White: Purity, Peace, Devotion
Green: Love, Health, Fertility and Growth

🇬🇧It's British flowers week 🇬🇧 so let's take a moment to get excited about British grown flowers, and in particular those wonderful plants that not only look amazing but yield some fabulous colour.

A particular favourite of mine both in the vase and in the dye pot is Coreopsis tinctoria.

The tinctoria bit of its name hints at it's dye potential (plants with this name are great for creating dyes) and this particular plant can produce beautiful golden yellows, oranges and soft neutrals.

Woohoo for British flowers 🙌🏻🙌🏻

It's been a while since I've said hello and introduced myself, so if we've just met and you're new to Humming B Ribbons I just wanted to say hi. 👋🏻

I'm Barbs, the 'B' in Humming B. A nature lover, life-long crafter, florist and of course, a natural dyer.

Since stumbling across the world of natural dyeing a few years ago, I have been experimenting with colour and fabric to learn more about this vast and long established subject area. Did you know that modern synthetic dyes have only been in use for around 160 years? Before that (long long before) it was all natural dye!!

It's truly mind blowing how much there is to learn, so when my head becomes too busy (as it often does) I love nothing more than to meander around my garden, listening to the birds chirping (or squawking depending on proximity of the cat 🐈‍⬛ ) and spotting what's changed since my last visit. To my delight there's a huge number of untapped sources of dye right on my doorstep and more that I'm yet to try growing. 🌱
