‘Shop update: Open… unless I’ve been lured into another ‘quick clearance’ that turns into a full archaeological dig.’ 😳

Abit of a last minute change to our normal routine this week, we (the baby and I, and the mystery machine clearance van) are off to Somerset! That’s right, over the dreaded bridge and into England where even the sat nav sounds stressed.

So, unfortunately for our Welsh treasure hunters, the curiosity shop will be closed this week/weekend and reopening on the 14th for the weekend.
Sorry for the last minute notice, I would say something along the lines of ‘if I could clone myself..’ but I have..and she’s more interested in dissecting tissue paper dragons and screaming at the disco tiger in her jungle gym than selling 100 year old meat plates at the moment - Give it a few years.. hopefully! 🤞

From the 21st of this month we will be back to our summer hours of open all week, 11-4, including Sundays.

As I’m chocker with clearances until end of June, My wonderful Aunt (and mastermind behind our dragon and bear window take overs) will be here from the 24th, some of you met her in January ; she’s very kindly minding the shop for a week whilst I get eyebrow-deep in cobwebs.

As I mentioned before, I will then be looking for someone/people to do four days a week in the shop from the start of June- September.
Details to follow at the end of next week so keep your eyes peeled if you are (or you know someone who is) looking for summer work. I’m looking for someone local, reliable and enthusiastic - these traits more important than being decked out in retail experience!
(I have received some messages already so I’ll get back to you next week!)

We’ve a few exciting events coming up over the summer, which is a new thing for us as we usually don’t do the shows etc, but an ‘on theme’ one to mention for now will be for the August bank holiday when we will be doing a two day pop up shop in Somerset.
The Curiosity shop in Wales will also be open over that long weekend!
Then the following weekend, we will be at Aberglasney with a van full of enamelware, tin watering cans and assorted garden salvage for their summer event ..which (as an appreciator of a good Orchid) I’m particularly looking forward to - again, the shop in Cardigan will also be open!

That’s it for now, I’ll be heading back over the bridge to open the Curiosity shop on the 14th before England puts me on a subscription plan and I start missing Wales’ excellent commitment to taking its time!

(This 1930’s Underwood typewriter has been getting a lot of love in the shop over the weekend just gone, it is in such a lovely condition and I can confirm that it does still work! Take this as your sign to write that novel/love letter/letter of complaint. You know where to find it 😉)

Time to address the elephant (for once not ceramic) in the room before the old Tom-tom drums start.. 🐘🐘🥁

Some eagle eyed folks will have spotted this weekend the baby and I knocking about with someone who sounded like Otto, but was missing his trademark top knot and looking sufficiently baby-faced - fear not, we’ve not traded him in for a younger model.

Back in March Otto rejoined the military in the same unit that he was in 12 years ago.
Before anyone gets any big feelings or opinions about it (because believe me, I’ve heard it all) he did so with my blessing and we (me, the baby and extended family!) are very, very proud of him.
Sometimes it’s the ‘what if’s’ that will tend to linger if they aren’t explored.

When that particular itch has been scratched, I’m sure you’ll see him back in the shop, bossing me around and asking me where I’ve hidden the parcel tape.
Until then it’s little old me (and obviously, boss baby) who is large and in charge at the little Curiosity Shop, and I’m sure our seasoned customers will be celebrating that because you know you’ll get a good bargain with me behind the till 😂

At present he’s doing the gruelling 9 months of basic training and only home for very short windows, but you’ll probably see him on and off at the shop and around the area in that time, mostly checking to make sure I’ve not sold his Afghan Jezail for £50 😂

And here comes the potential jump scare for all of our house clearance customers who have had us working for them on jobs since March:
it has been me doing the clearances and I will continue to be doing so.
Thats right, I’ve been trusted to take care of both of Otto’s babies. 😱
Otto has spent three years building up the house clearance business and he’s trusting me to keep it growing and delivering the top notch service that he’s worked so hard to maintain. No pressure!! 😅

So, to be entirely transparent, I felt it was really important that I got a few solo clearances under my belt before it was made common knowledge - because let’s face it, It’s a tough old industry at the best of times.
But you will all know by now that I love a challenge, and I love to be put firmly out of my comfort zone, so really I’m relishing the opportunity to see where I can steer the business - albeit at a hundred miles an hour, with bits hanging off! 👹
And, most importantly, the wheel has to keep turning regardless of what else is going on.

As it turns out, and not to feed into gender stereotypes, women are pretty good at clearing up dusty old messes and we’ve had some wonderful reviews online..so maybe that’s our new USP, whilst the big boss is away - like the No1 ladies detective agency (Alexander McCall Smith fans will know what I’m rattling on about!), we are the gentlewomen’s clearance bureau 😂

Not only has it been the busiest (and most interesting in terms of whose houses we’ve been clearing!) we’ve been since we started the clearance business, but it’s allowing more employment opportunities for local people (I can do alot of things, but dead lifting furniture postpartum is not one of them!) which is something we will be urgently growing further, as we’ve five local clearances booked for May-June.
Again, Otto is still very much in charge, making sure I follow all his health and safety whatsits and don’t inhale too much asbestos whilst rooting through dusty sheds 😅 but I can now get away with stacking the van to the rafters and keeping all the rusty old biscuit tins..for awhile at least 😂

So, when you’ve seen me flying down the high-street at the speed of knots, frazzled and driving the pram like wacky races, it’s likely because I’m still getting back in to the swing of being back at the shop, as well as up to my eyeballs in dust and uncleaned treasures.
For the rest of May I will be opening the shop Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I will be looking for a person/persons to help in the curiosity shop from June, so please keep your eyes peeled on here if you are interested in summer employment - I’ll post a formal advert in the coming weeks but it’s more about the right person, than retail experience.

Now more than ever, I’m saying a heart felt thank you from myself, Otto and the baby to all our customers (shop and clearances) for supporting our small family businesses.

I look forward to seeing some of you on the High Street very soon and fingers crossed for a busy (and sunny!) summer!

The grand high switch over is complete and the very large Mason’s dinner service is now wrapped and ready for its new home.

In its place I’ve put out this very lovely Booth’s willow pattern breakfast service..with a few little extras included!

I really love this service as not only is it classic blue and white, it is useable AND quirky in a tasteful way..those little egg cups 😻

To compliment the service, I’m also including a willow pattern sugar bowl, salt and pepper shakers, tea pot and two Ventonware serving dishes.

So, if you are looking to restart the old custom of giving dinner or tea services for weddings, birthdays or other special occasions (another willow-patterned, cheese domed shaped hill that I will gladly die on!) I highly recommend this set!! You’ll be favourite relative/husband/friend for at least the rest of 2026!

We are open tomorrow 10-4pm and you can find us on Cardigan High Street opposite JJ Morris estate agents.

I had intended to open the shop today (infact the baby and I are here)
BUT
(And I can hardly believe I’m writing this)
The majority of our big furniture in the shop has now sold and I’m currently waiting for a courier to arrive to ferry some of it up to County Durham.

The best part is, it’s all brown furniture.
That’s right, proving the old trope of ‘no one wants the brown stuff’ firmly wrong - which makes me very happy!
Definitely a win for the brown furniture revival of which I am a fully paid up member!!

On top of that, our very extensive Mason’s jardiniere pattern dinner service has also sold.
This time to a local collector - which makes me even happier!
So that’s more wrapping for me than Santa’s elves in December.

It does mean that, in order to make the shop safe for customers and not a ceramics version of Takeshi’s castle, I’m going to have to go home and get more stuff to display the smalls on before I can open again!
Death by Victorian jelly mould is not something that our insurance covers (although after the weekend’s incident with the brass weight, I think it should!)

So I’ll be returning this evening and tomorrow with a vehicle stuffed to the gunnels because, if you hadn’t noticed, parking is at a-bit of a premium during the day here on the high street 😳 - and it’s great fun also trying to unload in the loading bay when a person in a bigger lorry tells you to move whilst you are trying to deadlift a chest of drawers (closest I’ve been to exercising my right to postpartum rage!)

We still have three remaining brown furniture bits left in the shop at the moment, all very unique and affordable as pieces to buy that will last you a lifetime:

-A regency style sideboard for £85 (I really love the acorn handles!)
-A small pot cupboard for £55
- The south African rosewood jardiniere stand £55

We will be reopen again on Friday from 10-4, with lots of new stock for you to browse through, but for now, I’m off home to stack the car like furniture Jenga around the baby! 👶

When your new stock matches your pocket flower ⬆️ swipe to compare! 🌻🌻

Boss baby approved, this lovely summery unmarked set is winging its way to the shop this week.

Bowl, jug and tiny vase are £35 for the set!

The rest of the week is looking to be sunny and warm, so we hope to see a couple of you venturing on to the high street this weekend!! ☀️🕶️

Thank you for another fabulous week on the High Street - We are only here because you keep visiting us and giving our treasures new homes!!

That being said we’d love to know, what we are doing right and what we can improve on/what you’d like to see more of?
We’d love to read your views on our reviews page!!

The shop will be closed on Monday and Tuesday and reopening again on Wednesday, 12-4!

(We now have a blanket ban on all postal scales in the shop 🤬 as I got a little over zealous with swinging one around whilst dusting and didn’t realise those big old metal weights at the front aren’t glued down 😳 My big toe has gone blue with disgust at having 4lb of brass weight dropped on it from a height, but I guess it comes with the job 😂 Nail lost by antique postal scale. Pictured are the now evicted scales; more than an acquired taste!!)

Roses are red, violets are blue… our vases are vintage, and far better than new. 😉

Each one has survived decades (some even centuries) of questionable interior design choices—so they’ll definitely survive yours.

One-of-a-kind pieces, zero mass production, and just the right amount of “where did you find that?”

Elegant, a little mysterious, and guaranteed not to match anything your neighbour bought from a flat-pack aisle.

Give your flowers the upgrade they deserve—or just take one home and pretend you’re the kind of person who always has fresh flowers.
We won’t tell. 😳😉

We are open tomorrow 10-4, with more vases than you can shake a feather duster at! 🪶

This weekend is ‘big deals on better cameras’ in the Curiosity shop 📸📷📹

What is ‘big deals on better cameras’, you might be wondering?
Well, it’s a tag line that I’ve cooked up to entice the camera lovers amongst you to visit us on Cardigan High street and buy yourself a nice little photography related bargain from our currently bulging camera cupboard - a bulging cupboard that needs some of its tenants to return to work, so I can actually close the doors!

We had the honour of clearing a local photographers house in January and like anyone who takes pride in a craft, he had accumulated a lot of equipment.

So, there are many fantastic deals to be had - wildlife photography lenses from £25, Canon SLR cameras from £25, Kodak brownies from £20, camera tripods from £10.. and I’m even going to brave the cut-throat high street loading bay first thing to bring in two very industrial looking studio lights - they’d be a fab buy for a clever person who is into repurposing things.

We’ve even got a Canon camera, plus 4 lenses, flash and storage bag for £70. 🥳

I could go on, but I won’t - you’ll just have to come and have a rummage instead!

We are open tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday, 10-4!!
You can find us on Cardigan High Street opposite JJ Morris estate agents

West Wales rain update: at this point, we’re not saying it’s biblical… but if a bloke called Noah turns up asking for measurements, we’re ready.

In fact, we’ve got just the thing to help —or at least provide morale and a blueprint!
This lovely Noah’s Ark iron door stop. 🐘🦒Built to hold firm even when the heavens open (again… and again… and again).

And as a completely unrelated precaution… we may or may not be looking into stocking coracles for the next time the bridge in Llechryd decides it’s had enough and goes for a swim.😂

Stay dry. Or at least… stay afloat.

We are open today and all weekend (including Sunday), 10-4!

(Door stop is £20 and measures 20cm in length and 17cm in height)
