I am getting heartily fed up with selling on eBay due to their new "Managed Payments" system. I understand that some potential buyers are having trouble paying for items that they wish to buy.
If you see anything on my eBay site (user name 'paxnobiscum", please contact me via Facebook. I can take payment via PayPal which also protects you as a buyer (and me as a seller).

We have listed a collection of Victorian Sixpences on eBay including a couple of rarities; an 1887 Jubilee Head, withdrawn reverse variety R over V in "Victoria" error and also another 1887 Jubilee Head error...the engraver's initials J.E.B. are on the truncation of Victoria's bust rather than below it. This is believed to have been caused by the erroneous use of a Half Sovereign obverse die. Both are rated R3; Very Rare in "English Silver Coinage since 1649", 6th fully revised edition by Maurice Bull, published by Spink, London.

The rarest of this is an extremely rare George III 1820 sixpence with the 1 inverted. This is rated in "English Silver Coinage" as R4; extremely rare ( a 12 point scale, R7 being the rarest, C3 being the most common).
This was last on the open market in 2006 in Spink's Numis, matic Circular, reference MS7163.

We have just listed several ancient Greek & Roman coins on ebay. The star coin is a stunning Greek silver Tetradrachm from Attica (current day Athens) dating from approximately 410BC. The coin weighs 17.38g., is approximately 28mm diameter and a chunky 5mm thick and unusually shows all of the intended design.
The obverse has the head of Athena facing right. in very deep relief. She is wearing a crested and decorated Attican helmet. The reverse, also in deep relief, has a standing owl facing right, AOE in front and an olive sprig and crescent behind, all in an incuse square.
This is an iconic classical coin design. In excellent condition for a coin nearly 2500 years old!
On ebay at a very reasonable £1150.....yours for £1000 if you buy from me direct.

We have just added a group of Edward I hammered silver pennies to the Ebay shop. They are remarkably good value for an item over 700 years old!
Most unusual is this cut halfpenny. It was simple then; if you wanted a halfpenny or a farthing you just cut a penny into 2 or 4 pieces. This halfpenny has an unusual reverse legend: DUX + AQV + rather than the usual mint city or town name.

UPDATE 3rd November 2020
I have today heard back from the British Museum. This is a sterling or esterling of Aquitaine of Edward III of England.
Edward was Duke of Aquitaine before he became King Edward III of England. These sterlings were based on the contemporary English sterling penny and are believed to date from the 1320s to 1340s.
The full, uncut, Aquitaines are sometimes found in hoards of English pennies but since round halves and quarters were struck after 1279 it is unusual to find cut fractions of a later date. Some cut fractions are known but tend to be found around the Celtic fringes.
The full obverse inscription would be: +EDWARD' REX ANGL and the reverse would have read: DVX AQV ITA NIE
With many thanks to Dr Barrie J. Cook, FSA , Curator of Medieval and Early Modern Coinage, Department of Coins & Medals, British Museum.

This is unsold but is no longer listed on eBay.

Coin of the day is a Victorian bronze "bun head" penny dated 1864. This is a scarce date anyway but tis is the rare "crosslet 4" variety. This has an upward and downward serif on the crossbar of the 4 in the date.

Today's coin is another Charles I oddity!
This is a Charles I hammered silver shilling, mint mark Star,
1640-41, S2799. The reverse has an interesting and, as far as I can see, unlisted error. Instead of the legend CHRISTO AUSPICE REGNO it reads CHRISTO AUSPICE REGNA.
This is not yet listed for sale on the internet. If you are interested in purchasing this coin please message me.

We now have a rather unusual Charles I hammered silver sixpence listed on ebay. It is rather worn but appears to be a 4th bust variety with a square topped shield over cross moline reverse. Definitely not a Briot issue but it has a rose (1631 -32) mintmark.
This is for sale by auction on ebay, item no. 203100033092 at just £15.
This coin is now sold.

Today's coin is a George IV shilling struck in sterling silver and dated 1827 and is in Very Fine condition. This features the bare head, left facing bust of George IV on the obverse and a crowned lion facing left, standing on a crown above a rose, shamrock & thistle representing the three countries of the United Kingdom.
There is no indication of value on the coin. This was usual on British coinage at this time. Although some William IV and Victorian coins had their value on the reverse, it was not until the 20th Century that this became normal.
The 1827 is classified as "Rare" in "English Silver Coinage Since 1649".
This shilling is available for £100.00 including UK postage if bought directly from us.
