So everything I make, I want to ensure that I make the most of the beautiful wood I'm working with and do it in a method that is tradtional and sustainable.
I dont use metal nails or screw in my peices. And most of them would stay assembled just fine with the wooden framing and the relevant wedges, But given the right sort of movement you can get them apart again. and there is often some squeek in the wood, that is not very reassuring for heavier people, So i decided to start using glue.
Now most glue you buy that is modern woodglue is a fancy polyvinyle acatate stuff, thats part of wider global chemical industry. Varying levels of toxic and varying levels of environmental impact to create.
So i started using collagen glue, often called hide glue or rabbit skin glue, and as the name suggests that is indeed an animal product.
Now I COULD spend my days looking for road kill to make this myself, but i dont, I order it on the internet as raw collagen and mix it myself. So, unfortunately many of the pieces are not vegan.
if this is a concern for anyone, message me and ill use the nasty petrochemical stuff.
Its a great product to use, A hot glue, you mix it with water in a cut up pop can get it to a consistency you like (it can be used as a varnish or a strong glue) then you just need to pop it on top of the wood burner and paint (or pour) it onto the wood, and when it cools, Hey presto, No squeaks and its now not coming apart without, heat and a lever.
I wanted make a dyed varnish using some semi-petrified yew chunks i once collected from the borrowdale yews (A small grove of very very ancient yew in the lake district) as the wood was in such a state that it could be ground into dust.
the results were fantastic. It was a great glue for the inlays and also using it to varnish over the carvings really defines the markings.
Obviously the yew is something very sensitively gathered as i have a great respect for 2000+ year old trees, and it may be a very limited run of the ancient yew varnish finishing. but the experiment was a success and ill try other substances with the glue and see where i get.
