Josefina Alys Hermes de Vasconcellos MBE FRBS 1904 – 2005

The daughter of a Brazilian diplomat, Josefina spent her childhood between Brazil and England. She studied at the Royal Academy and Grand Chaumiere in Paris, where she studied under Antoine Bourdelle, one of Rodin’s assistants.

In 1930 she met artist and Anglican lay priest Delmar Banner, whom she later married. They settled in Little Langdale in the Lakes, where they both worked, with Josefina’s faith being a strong subject matter in her carving.

Her work can be found around Cumbria and further afield including Coventry Cathedral, Bradford University, Liverpool Cathedral, St Paul’s Cathedral and St Martin’s in the Field.

This resin statue of Jesus, originally with a wooden cross, was the original maquette for the statue ‘Father Forgive’ which is displayed at St Andrew’s Church, Greystoke, Cumbria. It was gifted by Josefina to her great friend Christopher Terry.

A prolific sculptor, Josefina was one of the first women to be elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors. She continued to work into her 90s, often recognised as the oldest working artist in her field. The Terry statue of Jesus is accompanied by a book of her work, signed by Josefina and gifted to Jono Terry at her 100th birthday party.
