Ever wondered which is the brightest sun tunnel?

What makes the brightest sun tunnel all comes down to physics; forget the marketing waffle. To get the most daylight down in to the room below, from a clear dome on the roof, via a shiny tube, you need the most reflective material possible. Which is where Solatube sun tunnels win hands down,
every time. That's because only Solatube uses 99.7% reflective tubing, whereas everyone else uses 98% reflective. It may not sound like a big difference but consider this:
*Each time light bounces it loses either 2% of its light with 98% material, or just 0.3% with 99.7% tubing
* So, over an average tube run of say 10 bounces 98% reflective tubing loses a massive 20%
of the light
* 99.7% reflective Solatubes lose just 3% over the same tube
run
* That's a BIG difference

This means that you need a much larger diameter system to deliver the same amount of light as a smaller Solatube.

Ultimately, the Solatube sun tunnel is the brightest system available, and delivers more light than any other. This video demonstrates, in a very simple, non-scientific way the significant difference between, the Solatube sun tunnel and other sun tunnel systems.

Want to know how to get daylight in to your home without suffering from heat build up?

If you have a dark room in your home and you'd like it to be lighter and brighter, then you could punch a hole in the wall and put in a window with the attendant re-plastering and make good/decorating, not to mention the
time.
Alternatively, you might consider a Velux style roof window, although
once again you need to allow for creating a plasterboard light well beneath it to bring the light in to the room below, along with re-plastering and make good/decorating.

With both these options, you will also have to deal with heat loss during the colder months, but of particular relevance is the heat gain you suffer in the hotter months.

A Solatube sun tunnel, on the other hand, delivers masses of bright daylight, but without the heat gain (or heat loss). Which means you can keep you home cooler during the summer and warmer during the winter. Plus
they can be installed in around half a day for much less than the other
options and they require no re-plastering and make good/decorating.

A Solatube is highly reflective tube, running from the clear dome on your roof down to the ceiling below. One of the best insulators is air (which is why you have an air gap in double glazed windows) and the Solatube is a relatively well-sealed column or air that minimises both heat gain and heat
loss.

So make the most of the daylight and sun light, with a Solatube sun tunnel and avoid the heat gain from roof windows.

Why are flexible sun tunnels not as good as rigid Solatubes?

I am frequently asked to replace flexible sun tunnel systems with rigid Solatubes, because flexi tube systems just don't deliver very much light. Here is yet another good example where you can see the difference, when I was asked to replace a Velux flexi tube sun tunnel with a rigid Solatube one.

You don't need to be a scientist to understand why this is. Daylight trying to reflect down a scrunched up, foil tube is bounced and diffracted in lots of different directions, consequently loosing much of the brightness by the time it reaches the end of the tube in the room below. Whereas the vast majority of daylight reflected down a rigid Solatube bounces smoothly down to reach the room below. It's just physics, not a sales pitch, and you can see the difference for yourself.
