Iconic
The Oak. Freighted with symbolism, mythological powers, and national identity. Mighty Oaks have inspired poetry, song, and innumerable representations in art and design.
With one of the most easily identifiable leaf shapes I have always been drawn to images and representations of oak trees, a fact not missed by my brilliant friend who never misses an present opportunity with something ‘oaky’ - the gorgeous carved spoon and dinky gilded acorn dish, a bespoke design by LG Studio just two treasures I’ve luckily received over the years.
And from to the Oak Leaf is a brand identifier.
But just how lovely are these oak leaf designed printed fabrics, all from female entrepreneurs - whose love of nature and textiles have combined to build hugely succesful fabric business supplying the interior design and retail markets.
Kent based , Sussex based and Cotswolds based - just a few of the very many fabrics and wallpapers available today.
And now I discover .uk make an oak leaf biscuit, my day is made.
Edible and beautiful in equal measure!

1-3 Zandra Rhodes - meticulous cutting, draping and the zingiest of colours and patterns. Never forgotten a lecture she gave at the V&A when we were at college, many moons ago. A totally captivating woman.

7 - 11. Views around . Peacocks and spring planting, plunge pool gazebo and gloomy somewhat omnipresent? overbearing? overwhelming, dramatically cloud pruned high yew hedges. 🦚

Resilient cheerful nasturtiums who survived the zero temps last night. Gathered with sprigs of astrantia, lavender, cosmos and the last coral rose. Floral sunshine glowing in the warming rays pouring through the windows this afternoon.

What a week.
Compton Verney & the wonderful work & collections of Enid Marx & Margaret Lambert alongside the Folk Art collections.
The luxury of time at Thyme.
Whiz into Cirencester and Burford for inspiration and fantasy shopping.
Olympia for more fantasy and festive fun.
Marie Antoinette style at the V&A - her plain linen shift worn to the scaffold, utterly poignant amongst the spangled splendour of the frocks.
Louise Roe and Kate Watson-Smyth at Christopher Farr Rugs discussing Layering in Interiors.
Leighton House followed by Sambourne House, a feast of Edwardian interiors.
Radical Harmony, Seurat & other favourites at The National Gallery.
A week of gadding and gladding, interspersed with bouts of work and ending with a weekend of hosting visiting friends.
Making and maintaining connections.
Eating and drinking far too much, but a fabulous way to launch into the winter months.

Serendipitous discovery on the daily dog walk.

A ploughing match on this gloriously sunny autumnal day.
Perfectly ploughed furrows, rich earthy smells combining with diesel chugged from ancient exhaust pipes, absolute concentration from the clip board clutching judges, immense pride and knowledge of these magnificent mechanical beasts and all the local chat and farming gossip you could ask for.

Gifts of Joy.
Belated birthday basket of very special presents arrived last night.
🎁
All handmade; jams, apple & elderflower juice, cider vinegar, whiskey liqueur, florentines, hand turned wooden bowl - or hand reared; eggs & plants - or made by female led local businesses; chocolates, skincare - or a sharing of skills, with a yoga session.

All gathered into a fabulous basket made by female artisans in West Africa.
🎁
Presents imbued with love and care from the best girl gang who Covid brought together, forced outside in all weathers, to meet for a Saturday morning exercise class. This group of girls has been a self supporting, fabulous group of women who know how to party as hard as we (ahem) train.

Oh, and guess which present came from our brilliant ‘head girl’ Jo, who gets us out on the field in all weathers and still makes us laugh even after the 10 burpee.

Fabrics, food and flowers.
Fascinating presentation by Ellie & Rachel today. Sharing the stories of their designs from inspiration, whether from textile document or small scrap of fabric picked up on their travels to the completed printed design.
Encompassing discussions on dyes, sourcing the best linen, mainly grown in Lithuania, to where the fabrics are printed and how to style and use them.
Plus a sneak peak at their new range of embroidered designs. All served up with a fabulous array of delicious, delectable nibbles.
