Thinking about shutters or new blinds before winter really sets in?
One question we would always encourage you to ask is whether the window covering will improve the comfort of your room as well as its appearance.
A full-height shutter can provide an additional barrier across the glazing when closed. A honeycomb blind works differently, using pockets of air within the fabric to reduce heat transfer. Properly lined curtains can also help, particularly when they cover the window generously.
And there's another detail that is often overlooked: gaps around the fitting.
Even an excellent insulating material may deliver less benefit if the installation allows air to circulate freely around it.
For a bay window in Chesterfield, a cottage in the Peak District or a modern home with large glazing, the best option may be quite different.
Our latest blog compares the choices and explains how independent testing has measured their thermal performance.
