Mangan Antiques

Mangan Antiques We are an antiques warehouse based in Chichester which supplies antiques to the Trade and public, se At the top of the road is the Walnut Tree pub.

Hidden in an unlikely location at the end of a farm track near Chichester, West Sussex, over the past 10 years Mangan Antiques have been quietly building up an impressive roster of international clients for their bespoke range of antiques and specialist designer pieces. From window displays with dedicated sales areas at Harrods, Selfridges and Liberty’s to Paul Smith’s high profile opening of his

Tokyo store, from the boutique designer salons of Manhattan and Chelsea to West End theatre designers and BBC costume dramas, all have benefitted from the specialist knowledge and unique sourcing capabilities of Mangan Antiques’ owners, Julie Mangan and Rudi Gargulio. For many years Mangan Antiques would supply only to the trade, and this has seen their specially sourced pieces sold to dealers and designers throughout the world. However, in 2008 they opened their doors to the public for the first time, enabling those outside the profession to benefit from Mangan’s unique range of antiques and unique designer pieces. This successful expansion has seen an unexpected sideline - wedding lists. “The bride and groom love it”, explains Julie. “They know they’ll be selecting items that nobody else has, it’s so very special to get something unique. We often find that couples will run two wedding lists, one at a department store for the things they’ll need, and one with us for the things they’ll love.”

However Rudi and Julie haven’t turned their back on their trade roots. 2010 has seen Mangan items at a medal-winning Chelsea Flower Show stand, featured in Homes & Antiques and Country Living magazines, being urgently flown by private plane from Italy to a Notting Hill shop, installed in the homes of Barbra Streisand and Harrison Ford, and in high demand from the dealers of the Kings Road, Lillee Road, throughout the UK and abroad – in fact, more than half the exhibitors at the prestigious Battersea Decorative Antiques Fair showed Mangan items on their stands! This is a fantastic example of 90s Italian commercial design, built during a time when salon furniture was treated as bold, statement-making sculpture.
Faux Ostrich Leather: The textured, dotted faux-ostrich upholstery was a massive trend in high-end interior and commercial design throughout the 1990s, used to convey luxury and exoticism without using real exotic hides.
Biomorphic Metalwork: The heavy, polished aluminum armrests shaped like curving horns or tusks with spherical joints are classic examples of late 1980s to 1990s post-modern Italian design. This era heavily favored “biomorphic” shapes—design that mimics organic, biological, or animal forms but executes them in cold, industrial materials like cast metal.
AGVGroup History: The AGVGroup formed as a fusion of several Italian design companies, notably including Giorgio Vezzosi, a designer known for bringing avant-garde, glamorous, and highly sculptural “post-modern” aesthetics into the salon furniture market during the late 20th century. This chair is highly representative of that specific Giorgio Vezzosi (often branded as GV Design) influence within the company.Height at the lowest elevation is 80cm (32″) Chair at highest elevation is 1m (39″) x 58cm (23″) wide x 60cm (2ft) deep approx. What a find, a beautiful Sacred Heart ex-voto, presented as a framed religious shadow box. These objects have a rich history rooted in folk art and devotion.
Here is a breakdown of what this object is and the symbolism behind it:
The Sacred Heart is a representation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (or potentially the Immaculate Heart of Mary).
The Flames: The flames bursting from the top of the heart symbolize divine love, passion, and spiritual fervor.
These are typically made of stamped or embossed metal (often tin, silver plate, or sometimes brass) and are known as ex-votos or milagros (miracles).
Traditionally, an ex-voto is placed in a church or shrine as a vow, a prayer for healing, or a token of gratitude for a miracle received (such as recovering from a heart condition or experiencing an emotional healing). The Shadow Box
Instead of being hung loosely on a church wall, this specific heart has been lovingly preserved in a deep oval shadow box frame.
The Flowers: It is encircled by a wreath of delicate, antique fabric or wax flowers and artificial leaves. This style of framing religious objects was incredibly popular in Europe—particularly in France, Italy, and Spain—during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Frame: The dark, carved wooden frame with a domed or flat glass cover was designed to protect the fragile textile elements from dust and damage, turning a devotional object into a piece of sacred home decor.
3. Cultural Context
These frames are highly collectible today. In France, they are often associated with Cadres de Mariage (marriage frames) or general family reliquaries, where families would display precious religious mementos, baptismal medals, or wedding tiaras alongside sacred imagery.
It is a stunning blend of religious devotion, antique craftsmanship, and folk art.

I have fallen in love with this vintage Italian Mid-Century Modern Murano glass chandelier, likely dating from the 1960s or 1970s.
It is a stunning example of high-end Venetian art glass lighting, frequently designed by Mazzega, a prominent Venetian glass designer.
The “Torciglione” or Ribbon Spiral: The chandelier is composed of individual, handmade mouth-blown glass prisms shaped into spiral ribbons or twists.
The Glass Technique: This is a classic Murano technique featuring a textured, ice-like clear crystal border with a solid, milky-white stripe (Lattimo or “latte” glass) running down the center. This creates a beautiful contrast, diffusing the light softly from the inside out while making the fixture look striking even when turned.
