𝗧𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗼 🍂🍒

Back in July we said the Globe Cherry’s autumn colour would surprise you. Here it is, doing exactly that. Warm oranges and reds across that perfectly round crown, and it makes its shape without any clipping.

It’s a compact tree that works hard all year: soft pink-white blossom in spring, a neat dark green dome in summer, this colour in autumn, and a handsome bare silhouette in winter. It reaches 3.5 to 5 metres with a narrow spread of around 2 metres, so it suits smaller gardens and does very well in a large planter too.

Autumn is a good time to plant, so come and see it in person. Our July article is linked in Stories if you missed it. 🌳

𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆: 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗶 🇮🇹🌳

Our family brand series comes to Cedar Nursery, and where better to start than Tuscany. Our Nursery Manager Dave visited in Pistoia earlier this month, and we came home with some lovely stories.

The Romiti family founded the nursery in Chiazzano, Pistoia in 1921, and they still run the whole business today. That’s 105 years of growing plants, which makes our 40 look rather young! 😄

Pistoia is known as the “Garden of Europe”, and about a quarter of Italy’s ornamental plants come from the area. It’s a place where businesses are often handed down from one generation to the next, and you can see it in the quality of the plants.

We’re proud to buy from a family grower, and even prouder that we’re a family business ourselves.

𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗲

𝗧𝗵𝗲 “𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗱𝘆” 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 🖤🫐

Belladonna, or deadly nightshade, has one of the darkest reputations in the plant world, and it’s been tied to witchcraft in stories for centuries. Its name means “beautiful lady”, from the old practice of using it to dilate the pupils to make eyes look larger.

That same effect is why it matters in medicine. Atropine, the compound first found in this plant, is still used today by eye doctors to dilate pupils, and in other medical treatments too.

⚠️ This is one of the most poisonous plants in Britain. Every part is toxic, and the shiny black berries can look tempting. It’s a plant for history books, not gardens, and one to leave well alone if you spot it growing wild.

🌳 Tree of the Week: Stewartia pseudocamellia 🌳

Everyone talks about the Stewartia’s camellia-like summer flowers and its peeling winter bark, but hardly anyone mentions what it does in autumn. So I wanted to show you.

Look closely and you’ll see the leaf edges have a darker, slightly burnt tinge. That’s the summer heatwave for you. But those centres are a glorious red, and the whole tree puts on a show of oranges, reds and purples before the leaves drop. Then the bark peels away in grey, orange and reddish-brown for winter. It’s a slow-growing beauty that rewards patience, reaching 6 to 12 metres over many years.

Now the important bit, and I’ll be straight with you: this tree must have acidic soil. Plant it in alkaline or neutral ground and it will struggle and, sooner or later, die. Aim for a pH of 5.5 to 6.5, with moist, well-drained soil and some shelter from harsh sun and winds.

If your soil isn’t right, don’t give up on it. Grow it in a large pot with ericaceous compost instead, and it will be perfectly happy.

𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝘃𝘆

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 🌿🎃

Long before Christmas, holly and ivy were brought indoors for protection. Holly was hung at doors and windows to keep out witches and bad spirits, and ivy was thought to guard homes in the same way. As evergreens, both were symbols of life that carries on through the darkest months.
They’re brilliant for wildlife too. Ivy flowers in autumn and is a vital late source of nectar for pollinators, then provides berries for birds in winter, while holly’s berries feed the birds when little else does.

And ivy leaf extract still turns up in some cough medicines today.

⚠️ The berries of both plants are poisonous to people, and ivy sap can irritate skin.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗹𝗳 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 🐺💜

Monkshood (Aconitum) is also known as wolfsbane, and it features in old werewolf folklore as a plant said to ward off the beast. It’s also one of the most poisonous plants you can grow, which is why it has long had such a dark reputation.

Yet in a border it’s stunning. Tall spikes of deep blue-purple flowers appear late in the season, just when the garden needs colour, and bees love them.

⚠️ Every part of monkshood is highly toxic, and the sap can affect skin. If you grow it, always wear gloves when handling it and wash your hands
afterwards. Admire, never ingest.

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗛𝗮𝘇𝗲𝗹

𝗜𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀 (𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆’𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲) 🧙‍♀️🌼

Here’s a Halloween myth-buster. The “witch” in witch hazel comes from an Old English word meaning pliable or bendy, not from witchcraft. Even so, its forked twigs were used for dowsing, the folk practice of searching for underground water.

It’s still used today too. Distilled witch hazel is a common astringent in skincare, used for minor skin irritation.

And in the garden it’s a winter star. Hamamelis flowers on bare branches in the coldest months, with spidery blooms and a lovely scent, when little else is out.
