The Earliest Christmas Post We'll Do All Year πŸ˜‰

We know. It's not even October. But this one genuinely can't wait, and here's why.

An inscribed garden bench, a name, a date, a few carefully chosen words, is one of those rare gifts that doesn't get forgotten by February. It sits in a garden for decades, quietly becoming part of someone's daily life. Morning coffee, watching the grandchildren play, a quiet moment at the end of the day, it's there for all of it.

The catch: proper engraving and bench lead times together mean you need at least two months from order to delivery. Leave it until December and you'll be disappointed, not delighted.

Teak is the timber of choice here, dense, close-grained, and it takes an engraved line beautifully, while ageing gracefully for years to come. Come and sit on a few from our Alexander Rose (Alexander Rose) range and feel the quality for yourself.

Plan now, gift something that actually lasts.

Our Office Smells Like a HermΓ¨s Counter Right Now πŸ‘

The osmanthus outside our office has properly come into its own, and it is intoxicating. Apricot, peach, a whisper of something almost leathery, genuinely difficult to walk past without stopping.

Turns out we're not the only ones obsessed. Perfumers have been chasing this exact scent for decades, it's a signature note in fragrances from houses like Hermès, and it takes over three tonnes of these tiny flowers to produce just one kilo of the good stuff.

So basically, we've got a six-figure perfume ingredient growing wild outside our office door. No big deal.

5 Plants for Late Summer, Early Autumn Colour πŸ‚

Just because summer's winding down doesn't mean your garden has to. Our Nursery Manager Dave has picked five that keep the colour going right through the season change.

1. Hydrangea paniculata 'Wim's Red'
Conical flowerheads open creamy-white from midsummer, then deepen progressively to pink and red as they age, so you get a genuine two-tone effect on the plant at once. Blooms on new wood, so a hard prune in late winter won't cost you next year's flowers.

2. Ceratostigma willmottianum
Clusters of vivid gentian-blue flowers from August through October, with the foliage turning red and bronze alongside them, a genuinely striking combination right at the end of the season. Low and spreading, perfect for the front of a border, and reshoots reliably from the base even after a hard winter.

3. Callicarpa dichotoma 'Issai'
Small pink summer flowers are just the warm-up act. From September, clusters of intense violet-purple berries appear along the stems and often outlast the leaves. 'Issai' fruits reliably even as a young plant and stays compact, ideal for smaller borders.

4. Viburnum tinus 'Rock 'n' Rolla'
A compact form of a proper garden reliable. Flat white flower clusters open from pink buds mainly across autumn into winter, followed by blue-black berries. Dense, glossy, year-round structure, with the berries adding late-season interest and feeding the birds.

5. Fatsia japonica
Bold, glossy, hand-shaped evergreen leaves give strong architectural presence all year round, then striking spherical white flowerheads appear from October into November, ageing to black berries through winter. Brilliant for shade, and useful late structure once most other flowering's finished.

Come and see all five in person, and let us help you plan the next stretch of colour in your garden.

🌳 Tree of the Week: Malus 'Elk River'

"This one's a real all-rounder," says Don. Malus 'Elk River' is an American variety, and it earns its place in the garden right through the seasons.

"Spring's the big moment," he explains. "You get a proper flush of pink, fragrant blossom, the kind that stops people walking past. Come autumn, the foliage colours up beautifully too, and you're left with these little mini apples, not far off a small Granny Smith, hanging on the branches."

Don's a big fan of how easy it is to place. "It'll tolerate pretty much any soil you throw at it, and while it prefers full sun, it copes perfectly well in partial shade too. That flexibility makes it a genuinely reliable choice, whatever your garden's throwing up."

Blossom, colour, and fruit, all from one tree. Come and see it for yourself.

5 Tips to Accessorise Your Outdoor Space ✨

The furniture might be the big decision, but it's the accessories that actually make a space feel finished, and lived in. Here's where to start.

1. Fermob Lights
Soft, ambient lighting instantly extends your evenings outdoors. Fermob's (Fermob) lighting range brings the same colour and character as their furniture, so everything ties together rather than looking like an afterthought once the sun goes down.

2. Blankets
A good throw means those slightly cooler evenings don't send everyone inside. Weaver Green (Weaver Green) blankets are woven from recycled plastic bottles, genuinely weatherproof, and soft enough that you'd never guess.

3. Scatter Cushions
The easiest way to add colour, comfort and personality to any seating. Caneline's (Cane-line) cushions are designed specifically for outdoor use, so they can live on your furniture through the season without a second thought.

4. Storage Stools
Extra seating when you need it, hidden storage when you don't. Fermob's (Fermob) storage stools are a genuinely clever addition, practical and good-looking in equal measure.

5. Rugs
Grounds a seating area and instantly makes it feel like a proper outdoor room rather than furniture scattered on grass or paving. Weaver Green (Weaver Green) rugs bring the same durable, weatherproof quality as their blankets, in patterns that hold their colour outdoors.

Small additions, big difference. Come and see the full range in person.

Goodbye August πŸ‘‹πŸ»

It's been a month of surprises, both botanical and marketing. We kicked off with National Flower Day and a nudge to plant trees now for autumn, then rolled straight into our Tree of the Week run: the flamingo willow, the black mulberry (and its very odd two-species grafting trick), the flowerless pagoda tree, and the drought-hero golden rain tree.

We had a proper "spotted in the wild" moment with The Florence pot and our faux boulders fooling absolutely everyone, celebrated our 40th anniversary with a visit from our local MP, and finally got our storm-damaged canopy back in action (RIP roof, long live roof).

The genuinely funny stat of the month: orange is now our best-selling planter colour, by a landslide, which nobody saw coming, least of all us. We also had a bit of fun asking whether AI can really design your garden (short answer: nicely, inaccurately), leaned into StablePave and our 5 Things series, and got the whole nursery outside for the solar eclipse, which turned out to be our best-performing content of the entire month! 😎
