Sometimes it’s not the layout that changes a space.
It’s the atmosphere.

This little utility room started life with bright red walls, a shower, mismatched finishes and no real sense of calm. The footprint stayed largely the same, we did knock out an internal wall, but by softening the palette, introducing texture, new cabinetry and layering warmth through materials and lighting, the whole feeling of the room changed.

I’ve also been exploring how styling influences emotion within a space. The final images in this carousel are creative styling explorations, looking at how softness, restraint and layered detail can completely shift the mood of a room.

Good design is rarely about adding more.
Usually, it’s about editing well.

Hello, I’m Michaela, interior designer and Founder of House of Lexden

Before interiors, I worked in music, film then ran a London television agency, matching people to projects across the BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

It taught me something I still use every day:-
how to read people, understand what they really need, and bring the right elements together effortlessly.

Now, I do the same with homes.

I design calm, considered interiors that feel instinctive rather than styled. Spaces that support how you live, not just how they look.

Classic design, with a touch of rock and roll.

Parisian in spirit — magnolia in bloom, light through tall windows, calm with a quiet edge.

Based in Essex, working across Suffolk, Norfolk and beyond.

This corner just feels right.

It’s the light more than anything.

I think people assume you need loads to make a space work, but you don’t. It’s just getting the balance right.

This is my favourite kind of design. Quiet, but it does something.

This room had everything. Height, light, and beautiful proportions.
But it needed clarity.

We stripped it right back, new carpet, new radiator, and a full redecoration to let the architecture lead again.

This space has been left intentionally simple.
I wanted to show how I think about a room like this and where I would take it.

Because good design is not about filling a space. It is about understanding what it already gives you and responding to that.

The final image shows my design direction. A softer, more considered approach to lighting and layout that works with the architecture rather than competing with it.

This is where design moves beyond decorating. It becomes composition.

Final image shown as a design concept.

People don’t need more ideas. They need clarity.

This façade wasn’t wrong.
But it felt stark, bright white, a black door, too much contrast, not quite resolved.

So I didn’t add more. I removed what wasn’t working and made clear decisions.

Softened the contrast.
Unified the windows, fence and detailing.
Introduced a muted lilac to the door.
Brought in warmth through aged bronze.
Added structure with planting and wisteria.

The result is calm, balanced, and properly considered.

This is what design does. Not decoration direction.

I offer this as a focused service for those who are finished with second-guessing and want a clear, resolved outcome.

If you’re ready to move forward properly, message me.

Thoughtful Design

This bedroom and ensuite were part of a home renovation completed in just five weeks.

The house was completely stripped back, flooring replaced, rewired, damp proofed, new radiators installed, painted and decorated throughout, with rooms reworked to create a calmer flow between the spaces.

During my consultation we developed the colour palette and overall design direction for the bedroom and ensuite.

The final image shows how I would style the room once completed.

Design tip

When a bedroom opens directly into an ensuite, using connected tones allows the two spaces to feel calm and cohesive rather than visually separate.

Beautiful homes begin with intelligent design.

One of my favourite moments of this project was seeing how happy it made my client. She was literally jumping up and down with joy.

She told me she never used to enjoy sitting in this room, and now she absolutely loves being in the space.

Hearing that the design has helped her enjoy living in her home again always warms my heart.

Thoughtful design really can change how you live, and this is why I do what I do.

Had a consultation today with my new friend Brad, and within minutes I was suggesting we remove the staircase and replace it with a step machine and a fireman’s pole.

Because if you are not getting fitter while going upstairs, what are we even doing as a society?

Then I may have proposed a swing, so you could launch across the room and land directly into a marble bath holding a martini.

He loved the new design aesthetic and said he is going to ask George if he fancies one in his house too.

So obviously we are now moving forward with timeless joinery, layered lighting, and proper townhouse elegance… with potentially excellent upper body strength benefits.

If you suddenly see very glamorous houses with suspicious ceiling fixings and unexplained core strength requirements… just know I am out here changing lives.

Sometimes the most important design work is almost invisible.

In this boy’s bedroom, it’s the quiet decisions that matter most, how the window is dressed, how the blind sits, how the radiator, joinery and colour work together without calling attention to themselves.

Getting these fundamentals right means the room feels calm, balanced and easy to live with.

Not styled for effect, but designed to support everyday family life as it changes and grows.

This is how we approach homes at House of Lexden: thoughtful planning first, restraint in the details, and spaces that feel settled rather than overworked.
