Semper Hopkins Upholstery & Interiors

Semper Hopkins Upholstery & Interiors We teach upholstery; in person workshops, corporate team building days, and online DIY courses. Learning about the tools and materials needed for upholstery.

Semper Hopkins Upholstery and Interiors benefits from two generations of craftsmanshi. They produce beautiful custom made furniture, offer a bespoke upholstery service and they teach upholstery workshops. Their workshop is based in a beautiful converted Methodist Chapel in Scholar Green, Cheshire. As a father and daughter team we combine our skills, passion and creativity to produce unique pieces

for your home. Ian specialises in carpentry and salvaging reclaimed materials, whilst Emma is an expert in upholstery and interior creations. From our workshop we design, and create beautiful industrial style custom made pieces to compliment your home. Each piece is handmade by the father and daughter team ranging from barstools, seating, stools, benches, tables, and storage. Using reclaimed materials, old furniture and a range of hand-picked high-quality modern materials. We care about the environment and by working with materials and old furniture we prevent them from going to landfill. All of our industrial steel framework is bespoke and handmade locally by Alcumlow Hall Forge. https://shupholstery.co.uk/custom-made-furniture/

We offer a customised upholstery service breathing new life into old pieces and transform them. Sometimes the inspiration is a family heirloom, sometimes it's just a favourite piece that has become worn over time, sometimes it's a triumphant find in a second hand furniture store. We specialise in the reupholstering of Art Deco, Victorian, mid-century chairs such as Ercol and Parker Knoll. We love working with old furniture as each piece has its own story and character. We are passionate about preserving these dying processes and skills and we endeavour to give these old but beautiful pieces, a new lease of life. https://shupholstery.co.uk/customised-upholstery/

As well as creating furniture we also like to share our skills and knowledge. We have designed a one day upholstery workshop to give an introduction to the craft. The workshops are perfect if you want a taster into the world of upholstery. You be taught how to make one of our stylish footstool storage crates. You are supplied with all the tools & materials for the course, you just need to bring 1m of your own fabric suitable for upholstery use. The workshop is held from our beautiful converted Chapel in Scholar Green. The course will runs from 9am-4.30pm. https://shupholstery.co.uk/upholstery-workshops/

One of the questions I've been asked a few times recently is:
"What if I'm not ready to physically start the room yet?"

The short answer is: that's absolutely fine.

One of the biggest misconceptions about transforming a room is thinking you need to start decorating straight away.
You don't.
A huge amount of what I teach happens before a paintbrush comes out.

Understanding how you use the room.
How you want it to feel.
What stays.
What goes.
How furniture will work.
Where it's worth investing your time and money.

In reality, the planning is often the most important part.
It's also the part people tend to skip.
That's usually when expensive mistakes happen.

Some people will leave the programme having transformed a room.
Others will leave with a clear plan, renewed confidence and the knowledge to move forward when the time is right.
Both are progress.
Because transforming a room isn't really about decorating.
It's about creating a space that supports the life you want to live.

Comment TRANSFORM and I'll send you the programme details.

One of my favourite things about teaching upholstery isn't the furniture people create.
It's watching confidence grow throughout the day.

People often arrive saying things like:
"I've never done anything like this before."
"What if I get it wrong?"
"I'm not very practical."

And then a few hours later they're leaving with a finished piece and already talking about what they're going to tackle next at home.

That's why I love teaching these workshops.
They're about much more than upholstery skills.
They're about learning something new, building confidence and realising you're capable of more than you thought.

What exactly is Design & Transform Your Room?
Design & Transform Your Room is a new 3-month programme designed to help you transform a room in your home whilst building confidence, practical skills and creative momentum along the way.

Over three months we'll meet as a small group of eight people and work through your own room project step-by-step.

You'll learn:
✨ Interior design foundations
✨ Colour, layout and styling
✨ Upholstery skills
✨ Creative upcycling techniques

But this isn't just about learning new skills.

It's also about having:
✨ Time dedicated to your project
✨ Expert guidance and feedback
✨ Accountability to keep moving forward
✨ A supportive creative community

Some people join because they're moving house.
Some are renovating.
Some want more confidence pulling a room together.
Others simply miss being creative and want to make time for themselves again.

By the end of the programme you'll have developed new skills, built confidence and made meaningful progress on a room that's important to you.

Sometimes accountability is the difference between talking about something and actually doing it.

Yesterday I introduced Michelle Ewen to lino printing and, in return, she kept me accountable.

By the end of the day I'd designed and printed the box and card for my Christmas marketing campaign. Something that's been on my list for weeks.

If I'd been in the studio on my own, there's a good chance I'd have drifted back to my computer and never actually got it done.

It reinforced something I see time and time again. People rarely get stuck because they don’t care. They get stuck because there are too many decisions to make, too many options to choose from and no one to sense-check their thinking. That’s where guidance, support and accountability become so valuable.

That's one of the reasons accountability is such a big part of Design & Transform Your Room.

Because creating a room you love isn't just about choosing paint colours. It's about making confident decisions, trusting your own judgement and giving yourself the time and space to create a home that feels like you.

Home transformation truth...

Sometimes the hardest part isn't choosing what stays.
It's deciding what needs to go.

Over the years I've helped lots of people transform rooms, and one thing comes up again and again.
We hold onto things long after they've served their purpose. Furniture we no longer love. Items that don't fit our homes anymore. Projects we know we're never going to finish.
Things we're keeping out of guilt rather than enjoyment. And often, creating space for something new starts with letting something old go.

Selling it. Donating it. Passing it on to someone who will love it.
Not because it wasn't valuable.
But because it has already served its purpose.

I think transforming a room is rarely just about decorating.
Sometimes it's about giving yourself permission to move into the next chapter too.

✨ Have you got something in your home that you know it's time to let go of?

One of the biggest misconceptions about transforming a room is that everything needs to be finished at once.
I don't believe that at all. When I'm designing a room, my goal is usually to get it around 80%
finished.

The layout works. The colours work. The key furniture is in place. The room feels calm,
cohesive and pulled together.
Then life adds the rest.
A picture discovered in a local gallery. A lamp found whilst exploring an antique shop. A memento from a family holiday.  Last week we made these fused glass sun catchers inspired by the colours of the Isle of Harris.
Every time I look at them, they'll remind me of turquoise water, white sand and a wonderful
family adventure.

That's what gives a home personality. Not perfection. Not having everything finished
immediately.
But filling your home with pieces that tell your story. I think the best homes evolve over time.
And honestly, that's where much of the joy comes from.
