Peddling my wares as a medieval potter and what a blast to be at Traquair Medieval Fayre this past weekend.
All my history nerd dreams were fulfilled with awesome reenactors, costume watching fun, jousting spectaculars and hilarious, cheeky bird of prey displays.

It was a joy to be there and talk about medieval pottery and marginalia art with everyone who stopped by

πŸ₯ Presenting Sir Aquamanile and his trusty steed!
βš”οΈπŸ΄πŸ°

Modeled after a 13th/14th century aquamanile (vessel for the washing of hands) found at Lewes, Sussex England. I find it both comical and so cool that such detailed sculpting with clay was being done to create statement, specialized jugs for simple hand washing at the medieval dining table and by cleargymen.

➑️ To see archaeological drawing of the original

Sir Aquamanile shall be gracing Traquair medieval Fair this coming weekend, May 23rd and 24th in the Scottish Borders should you wish to be formally introduced.

Maybe they'll spore and more will pop up? πŸ‘€

Fun doing this simple little motif. I think they're adorable, and yes, I know it's spring, but autumnal motifs and colours are just the best, at all times of year!

The medieval wheel got its first official outing this last weekend for a fantastic day being part of Lanark Medieval Celebration this year. The sun was shining, there was everything from blacksmithing, to leatherwork, jewelry, lace making, owls, music, battle displays and herbalism. Fantastic!

I enjoyed showing off the humble skills of a medieval potter working a kick wheel. And I was really working on my coordination of working both my hands and legs at the same time πŸ˜… But lots of bowls were made that day on the wheel and it was great to have interested crowds as always. My legs are enjoying the rest post-event though πŸ˜‚

SHINY burnished iron age pottery making session this morning. And I always love breaking out the good old pointy bone tool for doing the decorating the ancient way too. Hope it turns out well in the firing!

The design is inspired by finds from Glastonbury Lake Village, England, but this pot may or may not be destined to become my secret coffee mug at historical iron age events (πŸ€«πŸ€β˜•).

A first go at throwing on my newly finished medieval style pottery wheel today, and man is it different from an electric one! Lots learnt already and lots still to learn, practice and master with it. πŸ›ž

There's a real rhythm to working on it. I've found I need to kick with both legs depending on which part of the throwing process I'm doing, sometimes I need to kick whilst throwing, and other times I can kick and then separately throw whilst it's just spinning away.
It's definitely harder so far to get even walls on the pots and especially even rims, but I'm sure that will come with practice.

But being able to sit outside making pots on a historical style wheel on a fine pre-spring day with the birds flitting around the garden was pretty cool.

I think I might grow to be friends with this medieval wheel! I've been dreaming of having one for a few years now πŸŒ€

(This is sped up to 3x speed by the way, just to note it's not nearly this fast in real life πŸ˜…).

No AI here! Just me, my clay, my drawings, research, hours of work and practice, time and skill.
So instead of an AI caricature that seems to be all the craze right now, here’s a caricature I drew myself of me doing my job, and a picture of the real me in my workshop too. Reality and human crafted art always!

It might've taken me an age to get round to it, but it's here!
A few lovely cups, bowls, mugs and a little selkie have made their way onto my webshop update.
So take yourself a peek at some handmade ceramics inspired by whimsy and the wilds. πŸ’šβ˜•

And I've promised myself to do better with my webshop this year (I feel like someone needs to hold me accountable to this πŸ˜…).

I'll be on the BBC tonight at 18.30 on BBC2 on 'Robson Greens Weekend Escapes'!

We make pots the ancient way. It was a pleasure to meet Robson and Carol, and to play with clay with them in a beautiful setting!
