Smyrneika Crafts & Designs Handmade crochet items & jewelry with a Mediterranean spirit What is Smyrneika? She designs and makes jewelry, some of which you can find in this store.

Smyrneika means โ€œIzmir styleโ€, Izmir being my hometown on the Aegean cost of Anatolia. It most commonly refers to the music genre made by Greek and Turkish musicians in the smoky taverns of Izmir during the early 1900s. Smyrneika songs tell of the yearnings, sorrows and joys of peoples and especially immigrants from both sides of the Aegean sea; a multicultural, heartfelt music that carries notes

from the Aegean cost with its olive trees, sunshine, blue skies and warm, windy seas. As a descendant of those immigrants who settled in Izmir nearly a century ago, I learned to crochet and design clothes and jewelry from my mother, carrying on a long tradition of color and design. My mother lives in Didim, just south of ฤฐzmir and right next to the remains of the famous Temple of Apollo. My husbandโ€™s grandmother has learned to crochet from her parents in her childhood on the other side of the Aegean sea, before immigrating to Izmir when she was ten years old. She has been making lovely pieces of clothing and blankets for the whole family for over half a century. After quitting my career in architecture, I felt there was no better way to follow my passion for design than introducing Izmir style crafts and designs to the wider world. No name seemed more suitable for our store than Smyrneika.
