Tear Up - Willow & Fibre Festival 2026!! 🤸

What. a. week. FILLED with joy and laughter and happy tears, previous friendships solidified, new ones created. I have come back with VAST amounts of inspiration from all you amazing people. It feels good to come out of the basketmaking cave and connect with so many.

Cutting off all my work that I'd done on day two was quite the emotional roller coaster, but I'm very glad I did and there's no regrets, even though it meant I didn't have time for the lid. Maybe if you're going to try the Gallo-Roman weave for the first time, don't do it on a square and with brown willow 😉 (respect to all the gals in the class who did) watch this space as I'm not going to be beaten by it, and I've left with something I'm happy with as well as learning lots of brand new things. Martin Daniel and Isabelle are such fantastic makers, it was an honour to learn from them. I'll be finishing my basket over the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled for the finished product.

A big thank you to Noam Winkler for capturing the moment, to Alex Rooted for my cute as a button basket charm gift that's been added to my Brigid's cross, to Sylvia Friday for gifting me what she made with Braided Grain (Lu Towle) (who had faith in me to do my first ever podcast, link to it in my bio), Kings Willow Baskets who gifted me a gorgeous mint-chocolate basket, for teaching me the rose knot and always sorting me out with the best of willow, Rosie Farey for teaching me the adorable sea urchin basket (and Rosie 2 for being so sweet and insisting I take her place on Rosie's workshop) Gavin Ross for bartering a very lovely cup and bowl for my reenacting, Jefke Geysels | De Ratelaar and .bouwen for just being the most lovely and supportive Tear Up Mum and brother a gal could ask for. And of course to Eddie Glew for asking me to come along and display my work - thank you so much for all the lovely comments about it and a bigger thank you to everyone who bought something from me. Also a shout out to all the lovely ladies who were also in Daniel and Isabelle's class - it was a joy to learn alongside you. I love you all!!! 💚💚💚

A remake of a laundry basket I made on a Eddie Glew skills week well over a year ago, but this time using my FAVE material that is buff noir from Musgrove Willows Ltd. - BOY does it work like a DREAM ✨

I'm a willow hoarder, so the 5, 6 and 7ft willow used in this was all from different batches, and therefore throws up some goooorgeous, subtle, colour combos.

Getting very excited for Tear Up - Willow & Fibre Festival , and this will be coming with me! Hopefully see a bunch of you there 😁

And so, as the wheel of the year turns, my History Matters Ltd summer stint has again, come to an end, where I have been hanging out exclusively at St Andrews Castle talking basket making and it's history to as many people as were willing to listen 💚

It has warmed my soul to see the enthusiasm from young to old around this fabulous craft, and I have loved to hear the stories you've shared with me about your own heirloom baskets that you've adored and cherished in your lives, often made by family members 🧺

My job as a reenactor is to "enhance the visitor's experience", and in doing so, you all have enhanced my own view of my craft, and proved to me that it is very far from a dying one!

Lots of love to all of you who stopped for a chat and shared your stories - I was rubbish at taking any photos because I was so busy gabbing or weaving, so thank you very much Eric Wallengren for catching this lovely shot. See you for more in the autumn holidays! 💚

Highland adventures with the Highland Back Creel 🌿

I actually made this one to enter into the Royal Highland Show competition with the theme "a Celebration of Craft, Community and Countryside", but muggins here read the drop off info wrong and didn't manage to enter it in time! 🤦 So I've absorbed it into my own collection I love it so much.

The stripped white willow being the "community" side of it, with stripping of willow being a historically communal activity, the spliced wool rope speaking of the sheep of the countryside, and the creel itself fitting perfectly into the theme as a whole. A basket of the countryside, rural communities and of course, crafted by the people within them. Made with the classic round bottom of the Scottish (and Donegal) varieties of creel, and the window technique of Scottish descent also.

On a hair-moss gathering adventure (for future projects I'm excited to share soon) we took it to Aoineadh Mòr, the Lost Village which was a beautiful township affected by the Highland Clearances. There's a retelling of Mary's story on one of the notice boards and she speaks of children being carried out of the village in creels, and it made me wonder when was the last time this village saw one! A special experience indeed.

We also used it for getting all kinds of supplies on and off the boat, a back rest of boating too, and for gathering flowers at my "Foraged Floral Mobiles" workshop that was part of Morvern Games and Gala Week Gala Week. A lovely activity and week that deserves a post all to itself! Truly a working basket of the people!

Such a fantastic weekend at this year!

It was a joy and honour to work with to help her vision of making a Scone Palace shaped plant support and living willow arch come to life. 🌿🏰🌸 Congratulations to Clara and the team for putting in such hard work and earning a silver medal for it!

Hello lovely people 👋💚

Here's a gentle reminder about the Great Scottish Basket Cases festival at Port of Menteith, Stirlingshire on the 16th and 17th of May. I would love to see some of you there to take a deep dive into some very relaxing and skills based projects!

Not only will you get to learn with me, but there are courses being run by super amazing Basketmakers from all over Scotland, and there will be a chance to attend a discussion with all of us on Saturday evening where you can ask us ALL the nerdy questions 🤓 and hang out with people who inspire you at a lovely, intimate event. 🌿
