Craft Leeds

Finally on my journey home I called into Craft Leeds tucked in underneath Leeds City art gallery, and where you can buy an original Becky Sunter scarf!

It's always great to have a little look around, a lovely mix of high quality makers beautifully curated. Again, some familiar work as well as some new names.

Christmas is coming up, and times are hard for everyone, buying from independent galleries and shops really makes a difference, choosing to buy from an individual maker sustains creativity and originality in a way that you just don't get from the likes of Amazon. You are supporting a real person and a way of life.

Heart gallery Hebden bridge

Yesterday I was traveling back up the country to Darlington, and I popped into the Heart gallery in Hebden bridge to drop off a fresh supply of handwoven mittens.

I love this gallery, there is always such a warm welcome, and so many tempting treats on the shelves. It's always nice to see some familiar work too, from artists and makers who have been stall neighbours at various shows in the past.

If you do one thing this year when choosing gifts, consider your local art or craft gallery, it really does make such a difference to the artists and makers and keeps places like this going in your town. The beating heart of your community ❤️

The Artist's gallery Ludlow

Today I dropped off my work at the 'Artist's gallery' which is run by 8 artists in Ludlow Shropshire.
It's situated on the first floor of the farm shop, just above the most amazing food hall. It is certainly worth a visit if you are anywhere near.

My work will be displayed for the next month, perfect for the run up to Christmas, as the whole gallery is full of high quality gift ideas.

New textures on the loom.

I'm having fun playing with warp tension to create textures.
I am fascinated by surface textures, peeling paint, bubbling rust, and the effects of material aging. We can be so obsessed with trying to prevent it happening, which is impossible, much better to accept it and enjoy.

What next?

Well, as always my workshops keep me pretty busy, both the term time courses and the one day workshops ( new dates have just gone into my website)

I will be exhibiting as a visiting artist The Artists’ Gallery (Ludlow) in Ludlow in October/November, so I'm just getting everything together for that at the moment.

I don't have any shows coming up, which is really unusual for me at this time of year, although not necessarily a bad thing. I will be focusing a little bit more on my website, continuing to supply galleries and of course working on new weaving ideas.

I will be out and about soon enough, I'm already looking forward to 2027 and making many plans.

Decay

I am fascinated by rusty peeling paint, the uneven disruption of surfaces.
As humans we are obsessed with perfection, with the notion of looking brand new, evenly painted, but with a bit of time and maybe neglect, nature pushes through and bubbles to the surface.
These neglected patinas are always much more interesting, and this is what I try to emulate with weaving.
Woven fabric is not just on the surface, the pattern IS the fabric, just like a fresco. Because my fabric is woven by hand, and I am not a machine the surface is naturally uneven, and I embrace this.

Alignment

Warping up is all about alignment, laying each and every thread in perfect order to create the pattern. I think it takes a certain mindset to be able to do this, some would see this as torture.
For me, a pleasure! Hundreds of threads to organize with plenty of room for disaster to strike at any moment, a snapped thread, a miscalculation, not enough threads, or too many threads left over. Only knowing I have got it right when I start to weave.

Then there is the alignment of the warp threads.

The pleasure comes when it all comes together and the hard work pays off. Totally satisfying.
