Dr Lorna Wing was a British psychiatrist. She was also the mother of an autistic daughter, Susie — born in 1956 at a time when autism was barely understood and rarely diagnosed correctly.

Lorna and her husband, also a psychiatrist, didn’t recognise what they were seeing in their own daughter. It took attending a specialist lecture before they finally understood. That experience changed everything.

She abandoned her existing research and spent decades studying autism instead. In 1981 she introduced the English-speaking world to the work of Hans Asperger and coined the term “Asperger syndrome.” More significantly, she was the first to argue that autism was not a single condition but a spectrum — a continuum of presentations that looked different in every person.

That concept is now fundamental to how autism is understood, diagnosed and supported worldwide.
Lorna also co-founded the National Autistic Society in the UK. She changed the entire framework.
Everything that came after — every diagnosis, every support plan, every understanding that no two autistic people are alike — traces back to what she built.
