Evolon Pansies for a Pop of Colour

Now that the garden centres are bursting with summer flowers, we felt inspired to try our hand at making some simple pansies.

We chose Evolon for this project as it has a slightly velvety/suede like texture and absorbs colour very well. All we needed was Evolon, some Crayola fibre pens and a little drop of paint.

One of the benefits of using Evolon is that is soaks up the ink so well that it penetrates to the reverse of the fabric - so there's no need to colour both sides. However, please remember to protect your working surface to avoid staining.

If you would like information on this, or any of our other projects, please do not hesitate to get in touch - we'd love to hear from you!

Lutradur Keyfob & Bookmark for Valentine's Day

Oh my goodness! It's almost Valentine's Day, but there's still time to make a little keepsake for the one you love.

After recently acquiring a new INK-JET printer, we decided to experiment printing on Lutradur 70gsm.

(Please note, it is extremely important NOT to put Lutradur through a LASER printer, as the heat generated during the printing process may melt the Lutradur and damage the printer). Please ensure you check which sort of printer you have before proceeding.

The keyfob pictured here has been made from a double layer of Lutradur 70gsm, printed on one side and machine stitched together.

We noticed the text was much more defined on the keyfob than the bookmark. This may be due to the choice of font, i.e. Comic Sans being a simpler, rounder text than the Gabriola script font used for the bookmark.

To make the bookmark, we drew a text box (about 21cms x 5cms) on our computer and inserted our chosen message. We then printed the image on an A4 piece Lutradur 70gsm using our ink-jet printer.

Before machine stitching the Lutradur on to backing fabric, we sandwiched a couple of shaped pieces of Evolon (transfer painted yellow) to provide some extra colour.

To add further interest, we inserted about half a dozen small foil hearts, to move freely inside the bookmark. (The number of hearts could represent the number of years a couple have been together, or maybe the number of children they have?)

And finally, we added a couple of blue transfer painted (Evolon) hearts and attached a length of narrow ribbon at the base.

If you have any questions about this or any of our other projects, please do not hesitate to get in touch. In the meantime, we wish all our customers and followers a very happy Valentine's Day!

Lutradur Luminescent Baubles by Anita O'Neill

We are delighted to share Anita O'Neill's step-by-step instructions to make these attractive baubles. Anita is a established Mixed Media Textile Artist and Tutor. Apart from hosting workshops herself, Anita also invites other artists to teach at her studio, Eau Brink Studio in Norfolk.

Please note – Anita is running this workshop at the Creative Craft Show in Exeter from 25th – 27th September. She is also at the NEC at the end of October.

Project Sheet: Luminescent Baubles with Lutradur

Bring a touch of handmade magic to your festive decorations with this Luminescent Bauble project. Using Lutradur as the star material, you’ll create lightweight, textured flowers that shimmer with colour and dimension. The result? A stunning, glowing bauble that’s as unique as you are.
What You’ll Need
• 70mm polystyrene bauble and hanger
• Good quality PVA glue (avoid UHU – it can melt polystyrene)
• Alcohol pens or suitable paints (test first)
• Lutradur 30gsm
• Flower stencil and texture paste
• Palette knife or old store card
• Acrylic inks in spritzers (Walnut inks also work beautifully)
• Metallic paints
• Small paintbrush and paint palette
• Heat gun
• Small scissors
• Sequin pins and beads
• Wet wipes and a wipe-clean table covering

Step by Step
Step 1 – Prepare your bauble
Dip the hanger into PVA glue and secure it into the bauble. Colour the bauble surface with alcohol pens (or suitable paints) and allow to dry.
Step 2 – Stencil your flowers
Place Lutradur flat on the table. Lay the stencil over it, and lightly spread texture paste using a palette knife or store card. Avoid applying too much – thin layers work best. Gently dry with a heat gun, allowing for slight melting if it happens.
Step 3 – Add colour and shimmer
Spritz your Lutradur with inks, layering two or more colours for interest. Dry again, then highlight flowers with metallic paint using a dry-brush. A good tip is to wipe off most of the paint, and brush lightly across edges and raised areas.
Step 4 – Cut and layer
Once completely dry, cut out the Lutradur flowers. For a 3D effect, layer larger flowers beneath smaller ones. If you’d like, coat them in acrylic wax to strengthen and waterproof before attaching.
Step 5 – Assemble
Thread a bead onto a sequin pin, then push the pin through the flower centre. Dip the pin end in glue, and insert into the bauble. Continue adding flowers until your bauble is covered.
Step 6 – Finish and enjoy
Allow to dry overnight. Optional: add glitter for extra sparkle. Hang your bauble and admire its luminescence!

Why Lutradur Works So Well
• Strong yet lightweight – perfect for layered, delicate designs.
• Heat-reactive – a little melting adds unique texture.
• Colour friendly – takes inks, sprays, and paints beautifully.
• Versatile – can be cut, layered, and shaped with ease.
Top Tips
• Clean stencils immediately after use with wet wipes.
• Cover your table with a wipe-clean cloth to make tidying easier.
• Experiment with colour combinations – bold, subtle, metallic, or even frosty whites.

✨ With Lutradur, every bauble becomes a mini artwork – glowing, shimmering and truly one of a kind!

Lutradur Kite - a Gift to Make for Father's Day

Father's Day is just around the corner and this is one gift every family member can help to make, no matter what their age or ability. With elements of measuring, design and painting, everyone can help with the construction - not to mention mastering the best flying technique!

We used Lutradur 70gsm to make our kites, because it is very strong, yet still lightweight. It doesn’t rip, fray or need hemming, which makes it ideal for projects such as this.

Here’s what you will need –

• One square metre of Lutradur 70gms per kite
• Measuring tape
• Transfer or acrylic paints
• 2 metres x 6mm wood dowelling
• Handsaw
• 6 metres of ribbon or tape
• Stapler
• Kite string

Here’s how –
1. First lay the Lutradur 70gsm flat on the floor or on a table. Carefully measure and mark a point 75cms from the bottom edge on the left and right side of the material.
2. Draw a line from the centre of the bottom edge to the 75cms marks. Then draw a line from the centre of the top edge to the 75cms mark to create a diamond shape (as shown in the diagram below).
3. Carefully cut out the sail, saving the four triangular offcuts.
4. Now think of a design or pattern and decorate your sail. We chose transfer paints to colour the Lutradur because they don’t run or fade, but you could use acrylic paints instead if preferred.
5. Next, cut four triangular pieces from the saved offcuts large enough to form pockets at each corner of the sail to hold the spars. We used the sail as a pattern to cut these to size and then sewed them on to the underside of the kite, although they could be stapled or taped if preferred.
6. Using the handsaw, cut two spars from the length of dowel to form the vertical and horizontal braces for the sail. Lay the dowel across the kite to mark the required lengths, ensuring a taut and snug fit when the spars are inserted into the pockets, so the sail stays nice and rigid.
7. For extra support, tie the spars together where they cross with tape or string.
8. Make a tail using ribbon or tape. (This needs to be at least 5 metres long for a kite of this size) and attach to the base of the kite.
9. Bows or ties can also be made from the offcuts and attached to the tail to give the kite extra balance.
10. Attach a piece of string to the horizontal spar on either side of the centre and a third piece to the vertical spar and join them together to form a triangle.
11. Tie the main kite string to those on the kite.
12. Head off to the park!

When not in use, the kites also make interesting room decorations, maybe for a child’s bedroom or conservatory wall or ceiling.

Lutradur Tulips for Easter

There's nothing like a few flowers for heralding the start of Spring. These tulips would add a splash of colour to any room and should last a very long time!

We made the petals from Lutradur 30gsm (the lightest weight we supply) and coloured them using Orange, Lemon, Wine Red and Violet transfer paints.

1. First we coloured sheets of copier paper with transfer paints.
2. After cutting the A4 Lutradur into 4 equal sections, we used a hot (not steam) iron to transfer the colour from our painted paper.
3. Each piece of Lutradur was then cut into narrow strips, twisted in the middle and then folded over on to itself ready to form into petals.
4. We soon had a colourful array of pieces.
5. Folding in the lower corners gave each petal the desired spoon shape.
6. We attached the petals to stems of plastic coated garden wire with a few simple stitches.
7. Finally, some green leaves made from transfer coloured Lutradur 70gsm helped to complete the arrangement.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like more information about this or any of our other projects.

Happy Easter everyone!

Zeelon Beads & Necklaces - a Gift for Mother's Day

This week (bearing in mind it's Mothering Sunday on 30th March) we've been making beads, by rolling up thin rectangular strips of Zeelon Medium which we had previously coloured in a variety of shades using transfer paints.

We made a large selection of plain coloured beads (approximately 3cms wide), with a view to cutting them up into smaller beads to suit a particular design or colour way.

To make bevelled beads we cut 10 to 12 long thin triangles out of a sheet of A4 Zeelon Medium, which we coloured using yellow transfer paint, before adding red spots for decoration.

We then applied some clear drying Tacky Glue all the way along the length and then, starting at the widest end, carefully wound the Zeelon strips round the handle of a crochet hook, before leaving to dry.

The sheet of paper next to the yellow beads shows the dotty design created with Red Transfer Paint, which we superimposed on the background colour.

Once dry, we painted the beads with Daler-Rowney Glaze Medium Gloss to give a nice lustre and threaded the beads on to a length of cord.

The motley brown straight cut Zeelon beads were decorated using an animal print design.

Evolon Snowman Family

Three seasonal characters to raise a smile this Christmas . . .

These little 'no sew' snowmen have been made from rectangular pieces of Evolon (20cms wide), which have been rolled into cylindrical shapes and stapled in position. They range in height from 6cms, 9cms to 12cms and are very quick and easy to make.

Simply cut a small hole in the position of the nose (approximately 6mm in diameter) and, using a black biro, draw on some eyes and a friendly smile. Then colour a semicircle of Evolon (6cms in diameter) with orange acrylic paint, before rolling into a cone shape to form a carrot nose.

Push the nose through the hole until it fits snugly and stays in place and then decorate your snowman to give him (or her) their own personality!

To make the crown of each hat, we cut down three plastic soap dispensers (the sort you put in your washing machine), and trimmed them with a circle of Evolon for the brims (or peak for the cap) before colouring with acrylic paint. Tiny off cuts of coloured Evolon were used to make a small flower to trim one of the hats and a strip of tartan ribbon made a colourful scarf for our tallest snowman.

We found Evolon was an ideal choice for this project as it is pliable, yet stiff enough to support itself and, like all our fabrics, it does not fray. Maybe something for the children to make during the Christmas holidays?

Halloween Skull Lantern - made from Lutradur & Zeelon

Here's another idea for a Halloween lantern - skulls with illuminated eyes! The finished effect is quite dramatic but, sadly, our photographs don't do it justice . . .

To begin, we downloaded an image of a skull from the internet to use as a template. To give a darker, more defined effect, we cut the skulls from a double layer of Lutradur 70gsm Black, fixed together using Bondaweb. The skulls were then secured to a piece of Lutradur 130gsm, wide enough to wrap around a clear plastic bottle.

We used a hot iron to colour a piece of Zeelon Medium with Lime Green transfer paint. After securing all the skulls and a couple of strips of black ribbon, top and bottom, we covered the Lutradur 130gsm with the Zeelon to create a veil of colour.

The plastic bottle was then cut down to the same size as our lantern. To mark the position of the eyes, pins were pushed through the centre of each eye socket. From inside the bottle, it was then easy to see the position of each eye and mark it with a felt tip pen. Using these marks as a guide, we carefully melted small holes with a soldering iron.

Taking a string of battery operated lights, we poked a small light through each hole. We then recovered the bottle with our skulls, taking care to line up the lights with the eye sockets of the skulls.

Please note: ONLY battery operated lights should be used and NEVER a naked flame.

Happy Halloween Everyone!
