Swifts are incredible. They do everything, including mating, on the wing and only come into land in order to nest. They spend just three months each year in the UK in order to breed before travelling back to Africa for the winter. They can fly at up to 70mph, the fastest bird on earth in level flight. Their screams are the sound of summer. But we are losing them fast. They have declined by 60% since 1995 and the two key reasons are the loss of nest sites because of modern building materials and loss of insects because of chemical farming.
This Saturday, 12th April, from 5pm, Frances Gynn () artist, is inviting you to rub out her detailed drawings of Swifts - that's 150 hours of her work - to highlight the fact that these beautiful birds are on the IUCN Red List.
Kevin Cox (former Chair RSPB) Donna Cox (Chair Moor Meadows) and Jerry Horn (Devon Swift Project) will be here, all talking about what we can do to help.

Our fundraising supper, on behalf of , was a great success. It was a magical and inspiring evening and we have raised over £1200 for 's Land for Women Project. Link in profile.
Our two chefs, (whose idea it was) and put in so much work and time, for free, and while also working full-time.
A huge thank you to Eamon and Jack, to everyone who came, for everyone's generosity and to everyone who worked so hard behind the scenes.
Two services, four courses, 28 guests plus several volunteers were fed handsomely.
A huge THANK YOU to: .co for their huge generosity.
And a big thank you to Carly who very generously loaned us tables, chairs, glasses etc. for the evening.

Three years ago today, Dan and I opened my shop. I'd just turned 50 and we'd moved from Bristol. It felt like a bold move and we had no idea how things would go. There were definitely times, early on, when I wondered if we'd made the right move. But Ashburton is a really special place with great people.
We live above the shop, which I love, and we're slowly making it feel like ours. And making our garden as wildlife friendly as possible.
And the shop - I feel very lucky to have. It's a gorgeous space with a rich history and I'm glad we get to look after it for a while.
Here are a few of my favourites from the past few years. We've got so much more to do but it's good to glance back occasionally.
Thank you very much to everyone who helps make the shop what it is.

One from behind the scenes at today's photo shoot.
This Saturday I'll be joining 60 other dealers in Insta Christmas Decorative Home & Salvage Show.
This will be my 3rd online fair with Alice and the team and, for small independent dealers like me, it's a brilliant opportunity to get my stock seen by people who can't make it to my shop in Devon.
From this Friday evening, take a look at all the dealers listed on page and then, from 10am on Saturday, each dealer will have stock for sale listed on their individual pages. You just contact them if you'd like to buy anything. It's that simple.
An antiques fair without the early start and from the warmth and comfort of your own home.

I'm welcoming in the new season by embracing colour and texture in art and textiles.
This Autumn will see longer shop opening hours, an antique textile pop up and I'll be hosting my first darning/visible mending workshop, so we can enjoy a new take on our favourite jumpers, if the moths have been busy. Watch this space.

I was very happy to receive my copy of the .guide to Devon today and I was so impressed by it that I'm now selling them in my shop.
It is a beautifully produced publication.
Thank you very much to the team .guide for the great write up.

* Upcoming Exhibition *

"In nature nothing exists alone." Rachel Carson, from her 1962 book 'Silent Spring', which has inspired this exhibition.

I am thrilled to announce an upcoming exhibition in the shop - the first of 2021.
It will feature works by three artists - and .blowers.artist.

My hope is that the exhibition will illustrate the fragility of our wild ecosystems and the decline of insects globally; the impact this will have on humans and what we can all do to help.  In short - the urgent need to protect biodiversity in nature.

Prof Dave Goulson, at the University of Sussex, states that this decline in insect numbers, “..should be of huge concern to all of us, for insects are at the heart of every food web, they pollinate the large majority of plant species, keep the soil healthy, recycle nutrients, control pests, and much more. Love them or loathe them, we humans cannot survive without insects.” Taken from 10 Feb 2019

I will be donating 10% of my profits to to support the important work they do in conserving, restoring and creating wildflower meadows.

I have finished painting the kitchen. And, in a week that's been a bit testing, it is a small victory. My goal today was to have the kitchen finished (enough to photograph) by midday. No pictures up yet, tiling to do, a few rough edges. Several things out of shot. And the obligatory bowl (Dan hates making drawers) of batteries that we have no idea whether they're dead or not, keys that we have no idea what they unlock, and pencils that need sharpening etc.
Happy Friday.
