Tuesday Tip #11

Here are some myth busting tips about flooring to consider when making your purchase:

Myth: Laminate flooring is cheap-looking.
Fact: Modern laminates closely mimic real oak, stone, and parquet – they look like the real deal but are often easier to care for.

Myth: Carpet is outdated.
Fact: Soft, textured carpets are trending again in bedrooms and cosy spaces. Hard flooring has many benefits but can be noisy and less comfortable, particularly if you have youngsters who spend a lot of time on the floor.

Myth: Real wood floors are always best.
Fact: The best flooring depends on lifestyle, pets, moisture, and maintenance as well as the room you will be using it in.

There are 3 common mistakes that people make when choosing flooring:

1. Picking style before durability
– you want to ensure your flooring is an investment in terms of how long it will last so going for a quality product is important (more so than the design).

2. Ignoring room moisture
- Hair salons and other environments with abnormal moisture levels need specific flooring solutions to avoid any tile lift. Consult with our experts who can guide you to the best options.

3. Choosing trendy over timeless
- We’ve all seen crazes for different looks (avocado bath suites for example have had mixed trend fortunes over the decades), but selecting a more neutral style that can be complimented with new décor, is always the safest bet as it will represent a genuine cost saving in the long run.

Tuesday Tip #10

What can I do to transform my home interior quickly and easily, at low cost?

1. Start small as even tiny changes can have a big impact
-Swap cabinet handles
-Change lampshades
-Add peel-and-stick wallpaper

2. Use lighting as a hero. Lighting upgrades are underrated but dramatic:
- Layer lighting (ceiling + floor + table lamps)
- Use warm bulbs for cozy spaces
- Add LED strips under cabinets or shelves (LED's are also cheaper to run)

3. Paint is the cheapest upgrade
- Create an accent wall for maximum change at low cost
- A neutral base + bold accessories works better than all-bold rooms
- Don’t forget ceilings—they’re often wasted space

4. Flooring can be a great fix
- Switch your flooring for a new look such as laminate, carpet or tile
- Add rugs to create ‘zoned’ areas and you could use a bean bag if you don’t have a chair or sofa

5. Declutter, then decorate as many “bad interiors” are simply overcrowded:
- Follow the “remove 30%” rule
- Group décor in odd numbers (3 or 5 items)
- Bring framed pictures together such as above and behind a sofa for interest
- Use object 'highlights' such as a beautiful vase or sculpture, but not too many

6. Instead of buying more items try to use textures
- Add cushions, throws, rugs (winter and summer ones for a quick refresh)
- Mix materials (wood, metal, ceramic or linen)

7. Bring in life
- Plants instantly elevate a space
- Even low-maintenance ones (snake plant, pothos) work

8. Mirrors are an instant space hack
- They reflect light and make small rooms feel bigger

Tuesday tip #9 🪄💪

To keep your carpets and rugs (and other soft household furnishings such as curtains) fresh and clean, try one of the following cleaning methods.

1. Adopt the scandi method by placing your items outside in the cold (preferably sub-zero temps) to cleanse and refresh them with natural cold air and sunlight. Beat the dust off them.
www.livingetc.com/advice/beating-rugs-duvet-outdoors

2. Run your item through a low temp delicate wash with a colour-kind detergent. If you need a larger drum to fit it into, use a launderette machine (but not if it’s pet bedding as there are separate washing facilities for these).

3. For carpets we recommend either hiring a professional carpet cleaner or hiring/buying a wet & dry vacuum cleaner to use on your carpets, ideally annually as a minimum. You can also lay rugs on a clean sheet or tarpaulin outside and give them the same treatment, letting them dry in the sun and wind. Pick a hot day so you can open all the windows to let the moisture evaporate from your home.

Specialised wet/dry vac machines can be hired locally at plant hire companies or from some supermarkets. You will be shocked at how much dirt comes up, especially at the carpet edges and in high footfall areas!
