Thank you to everyone who joined the mending workshop yesterday with Marie Marie Mallen and Sarah Oxfam Diss for Secondhand September. A lovely atmosphere filled the space with chatter and stories about precious garments. With a bit of tlc, these were transformed with both visible and invisible mending techniques - ready to be worn for years to come. All donations go to Oxfam and designermakersCIO so thank you all for your contributions 💛

Yesterday also marked Marie’s last day in the studio as she embarks on a sabbatical year to train as a science teacher - exciting times, and we wish her the best of luck in this new venture. But fear not, you will still be able to see and buy a range of Marie’s scarfs and jackets here in the galleries at designermakers21!

This Saturday our spotlight maker is the wonderful David Whatley!

David is currently working on a copper piece, inspired by the plant Dracunculus Vulgaris, read on to find out more…and come along on Saturday to visit David in the studio- we’ll be open 10am-5pm here in Diss.

‘I have been growing a plant called Dracunculus vulgaris (meaning Little Dragon) for several years. I bought a large tuber with this interesting name from the Redgrave and Lopham plant sale about five years ago.

This year, with the exceptional heat, suited it well.
I find it a remarkably strange and beautiful plant.;It flowers for one day only.
This year there were about six stems. The flower spike , or spath, when closed resembles a fancy rolled up umbrella about two feet long. The colour is a vivid lime green with a frilly , deep purple edge.
When the spath unfurls it reveals a long ,dark purple spadix which emits a foul smell— similar to rotting fish or meat. Flies are attracted to this smell and pollinate the flower.

Here the pictures show the stages in making the flower in sheet metal .
From a full size drawing to a template, followed by a prototype made in aluminium. The final stage , which I am working on at the moment, will be in copper. . I am hoping that there will be some interesting colours ,but without the smell!‘
