An unexpected reunion…

Our friends on narrowboat Lucy pulled up behind us and we enjoyed the next few hours catching up over coffee and cake, their adventures can be followed on their “canal chats” page.

We waved our goodbyes too soon and were off through the stop lock at Hawkesbury Junction, onto the upper Oxford canal, next stop Brinklow.

We changed our mind about a barbecue, instead we’re enjoying a walk round the nearby Brinklow…

Thankfully the cows were in a different corner of this “ridge and furrow” field we walked through to access the village.

Bridge 34 is a good spot to moor for Brinklow.

First stop for us, The White Lion 🍻

From our pretty countryside mooring south of Polesworth to Hawkesbury Junction, we travelled 13 miles and a rise of 80ft up the 11 locks at Atherstone, helped by the friendly volunteers.

There are useful visitor moorings half way up the lock flight which we took full advantage of for a shopping stop at the handy nearby Tesco and Aldi.

Then through Hartshill, originally a Roman settlement and has a site of a Bronze Age hill fort.
The canal then continues its route south, through Nuneaton and the outskirts of Bedworth, passing the left turn onto the pretty Ashby canal.

The 5 mile Coventry arm leaves Hawkesbury Junction, but we will continue South.

Huge shout out to the volunteers today, not only do they offer help at the locks but we noticed how clean and tidy the area is kept, one member of team was busy picking up litter, we appreciate them all, and of course gave them homemade cake! 🍰 😋

A few quiet days planned from now….

With the news today of a closure at Braunston Locks due to a broken lock beam we are definitely going to be slowing down!
EDIT… only closed for widebeams, narrowboats can get through using one gate on these double locks 😬

Hawkesbury junction is well known for it’s iconic Greyhound Inn and that’s our invitation! 🍻🍻

More of our journey along the Coventry Canal.

We left our mooring at Hopwas and headed towards Fazeley Junction where there is a right turn onto the route to Birmingham.

We continued on the Coventry canal to Tamworth, rising up through two locks, to continue through Alvecote with attractive wooded areas and long stretches of canal side houses with lovely gardens meeting the waters edge.

We had a brief stop in Polesworth where there was a family fun day in the nearby Abbey Green Park. What a lovely little town with friendly locals and lots to explore. We enjoyed a walk up to the Abbey Church, which unfortunately wasn’t open, but we had a good walk round the grounds.

We decided to carry on to a lovely open countryside mooring we had marked in the book from last time, just before bridge 50.

We enjoyed a barbecue on our Cobb cooker and were lucky to see a beautiful sunset!

How to avoid soggy bottoms…

Pizzas in a pan, finished in the oven gives a perfect crust!

I always use Jamie Oliver’s pizza dough recipe, the dough will freeze if you have more than you need.

Prepare the tomato sauce, blitz together a few good quality tinned tomatoes or tomato puree, garlic, herbs, salt and pepper.
Prepare all the toppings.

Roll out the dough and dry fry in a pan, make sure the pan is very hot first, spread to sauce over while it’s in the pan.
Top with cheese first then other toppings.
Finish in the oven. 😋
