With Spring now in full swing we wanted to reflect on our plant hospital project Hilda! 🌿🏥

From shop layout to the brand experience, the vision was to design a space centred around care, community and bringing people closer to nature. Soft materials, pops of colour, functional retail design and allowing the greenery to take centre stage shaped the space into something that felt fresh and easy to explore.

We loved seeing this project grow and blossom from start to finish!

At Substance Barbershop, it’s not just about bold colours and standout materials, it’s about the quieter touches too. This lighting detail was designed to guide, frame, and reinforce the identity of the space from the outside in. ⛓️💡

Clarity of movement, ease of use and intuitive layout were prioritised throughout, ensuring the building feels welcoming from the moment residents arrive. The result is a student home that balances heritage, performance and lived experience.

Before the interior design was developed, early thinking focused on student experience; how residents would live, move through and share the building and how it would sit comfortably within the wider community.

The aim was to create a building that functions clearly for residents while contributing positively to the surrounding streetscape.

Montrose Terrace is a purpose-built student accommodation development located on a prominent corner at Montrose Terrace. The project transforms a former derelict site into student housing, carefully integrated into one of the city’s oldest and most characterful neighbourhoods.
