Fabric that copes with paws and claws

Pets and good upholstery aren't natural enemies, but the wrong fabric will show every scratch and moulted hair within weeks.

Tightly woven fabrics stand up far better to claws than loose weaves. A dense weave resists snagging, so cats and dogs can't pull threads loose when they jump up or settle in.

Darker tones and subtle patterns hide pet hair and the odd muddy paw print much better than plain pale fabrics.

New build, blank walls? Start with the floors

New builds in Edinburgh tend to arrive with the same neutral carpets and vinyl throughout, fine for a show home, not so fine for the way you actually live.

Bathrooms and kitchens do best with LVT or vinyl: water resistant, hard wearing, and easy to keep clean under daily traffic.

For living rooms and bedrooms, a proper wool carpet like our Erskine Twist range gives warmth underfoot and a bit more character than the standard developer spec.

Curtains and blinds made to measure matter more than people expect in new builds, since standard window sizes are rarely quite standard.

We've done exactly this kind of work recently, including new stair carpets and reception flooring for the Indigo Hotel on Princes Street, so we understand what holds up under a lot of footfall.

Is Your Antique Frame Worth Re-upholstering? Check This First

Before you invest in beautiful new fabric for a cherished antique piece, the frame underneath needs to be structurally sound. A stunning exterior means very little if the bones beneath it are compromised, and knowing what to look for before committing to re-upholstery can save you both time and money.

Start by checking the joints. Sit in the chair or press firmly on the frame at multiple points. Any wobble, creaking, or flex in the corners signals that the joints have weakened and will need repair before new fabric goes on. Next, inspect the legs for cracks running along the grain of the wood, particularly around the areas where they meet the seat rail. These are common stress fractures on older pieces and, if left untreated, can cause the frame to fail entirely after re-upholstery. Also examine the seat rail itself (the horizontal timber that supports the springs or webbing), as splits or soft spots here indicate the frame may struggle to hold tension once new upholstery is applied. Finally, check for woodworm damage by looking for small exit holes and fine dust. Active infestations must be treated before any restoration work begins.
