We’ve given our website a refresh and added new projects. We’re highlighting our specialisations in the restoration of Georgian and Victorian properties, our work in the bakery and restaurant sectors and our light filled, contemporary additions to homes all over Edinburgh and other parts of Scotland. We feel very lucky to have a wonderful catalog of beautiful photographs by many of Scotland’s most talented architectural photographers. If you are thinking about improving your home or setting up a bakery coffee shop or restaurant, get in touch via the new ‘Project in Mind?’ button. Find the link to our website in our bio.

♻️ Repair Café in Balintore this May! ♻️🔧

Join us on Saturday 23rd May at the Seaboard Centre in Balintore for our next Repair Café.

It’s free to attend, and you can bring along anything that needs a little TLC, from broken household items to small electricals. Our volunteers will be on hand to see what can be repaired.

It’s a great way to save money, learn something new, and help keep items out of landfill.

Donations are welcome to help keep the Repair Café running and support the community, but there is no charge to attend.

Incredible. This project is 18 years old! I had the opportunity to revisit it this week. Possibly one of our most technically innovative designs allowing this garden room extension to take maximum advantage of its location within the Murrayfield Conservation Area. Working with structural engineer, John Watt, the sloping roof is formed in a lightweight, glued plywood, stress skinned panel (like an aircraft wing) for thinness and strength and its top edge is supported on structural glass fins. This design allowed us to maximise the south facing, clerestory glazing to capture and reflect midday sunlight into the space in all seasons of the year. Visit our website for more images.

The drum in our Craiglockhart project, featured in the current issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland, is an architectural element to complete the composition in both plan and elevation.

It is placed asymmetrically in the plan to create a smaller sitting space to the east and a larger dining space, connected to the kitchen, to the west. The drum, while going through the early design stages, was a wine cellar and a library for our client’s large vinyl record collection. In the final design it became a larder to support the kitchen.

In elevation, it is the vertical visual element piecing the curved, floating roof plane, pinning it to the ground. A classic modernist compositional technique to contrast horizontal and vertical architectural elements in a careful 3 dimensional arrangement.

@ references Sir Basil Spence’s exploration of the contrast between circular elements and orthogonal plans arrangements in his later work, most noticeably, the extraordinary Coventry Cathedral.

A very lovely article in the current issue of Homes & Interiors Scotland about our Craiglockhart project in Edinburgh to add to Sir Basil Spence’s first built work. 11 pages beautifully written by Malcolm Jack including an interview with our client and the always wonderful photography of Paul Zanre. An incredible amount of hard work by everyone involved including the technical coordination, specification and energy of Michael Nelson in my office and the meticulous crafting of the building by QBuild Ltd in overcoming the technical challenges of creating a curved building! Huge kudos to their site team for their care and skill, true artisans. Projects of this sophistication and ambition can only be achieved when every single person and specialist fabricator/supplier involved share our vision and work together with a single aim. Bravo to everyone!!!
