Michelle Lowe Pottery Fun hand-made slipware pottery by Michelle Lowe I do not have a shop but I do keep work in stock and I am open by appointment (no regular shop hours).

I make a range of earthenware pots which are hand-thrown on a potters wheel and decorated using colour slips (liquid clays).

Who wants to join us for a weekend in beautiful Cromarty playing with slips?

There’s a place just become available on a Scottish Potters Association workshop i’m running with the amazing Bärbel Dister next month.

It’s going to be great fun. We will be demonstrating all of our slip decorating tips and tricks and giving you the chance to experiment with them.

Slipware Decoration Weekend 24 - 25 October 2026, Cromarty

This two-day workshop combines demonstrations with plenty of hands-on making and experimentation.

On Saturday, Bärbel and Michelle will demonstrate a range of decorative techniques, including:
* Slip trailing
* Sgraffito
* Pouring and brushing slips
* Making and attaching handles and feet
* Texturing clay surfaces using bisque stamps
In the afternoon you’ll make press-moulded pieces ready for decorating the following day.

On Sunday, you’ll have the opportunity to explore these techniques yourself, working on your press-moulded pieces, tiles and any leather-hard work you bring from home.

£180 per person. (Plus £27 to join the SPA if you’re not already a member).

I went to Glasgow last week to deliver two vases that were a special project for me.

I was delighted when Refugee Sanctuary Scotland asked me to make them vases for their new hub in Glasgow.

They are decorated with a combination of the familiar Scottish plants which I often use on my pieces intertwined with plants chosen by people in the asylum system staying in RSS’s accommodation.

I wanted them to look like a really vibrant happy ecosystem with multicultural mix from all around the world growing together.

When I was researching all the different plants, I was inspired to see how many of the ones people chose are symbolic of resilience, strength, beauty, and growth. This seemed very appropriate all the people seeking asylum who I met when I was working for RSS many years ago.

Vase 1

Vietnam - yellow apricot blossoms and pink lotus flowers

Scotland - bluebells and oak

Namibia - welwitschia

El Salvador - Flor de Izote

Africa - baobab

Egypt - waterlily

Eritrea - meskel



Vase 2

Scotland - hawthorn, dandelion, thistle

Somalia - snake plant

Ethiopia - cactus, sycamore fig

Eritrea - red hot poker plant

Nigeria - yellow trumpet

Vietnam - peach blossom

I’m happy that some of my new ‘shift and flow’ work will be available from the lovely The Gallery from this weekend.

I’ve been getting lovely feedback from people about the new work, especially the rock bowls.

I think I might be becoming slightly obsessed with wrapping rocks in clay! (My studio is soon going to contain more rock bowls than there are rocks on the beach!)

It’s good to be back to making after lots of time prepping for and then a week of getting sorted in my studio again and sending work out to galleries and stockists.

Starting with some small slab bits today and preparing lots of clay for throwing again next week. Looking forward to being back on the wheel.

Thanks to everybody who came along and made so fun.

Thanks to all those who came for a chats and to those who bought things, those who took part in workshops and watched demos, and those who patiently sat to have their portraits drawn by our children!

It all left me feeling very grateful to be part of such a friendly creative community.

And huge thanks to all the organisers and volunteers at to and to for hosting me and my work.

The most important pieces in the kiln are my son‘s mushroom necklaces which he was very delighted to sell out of last weekend. He has speedily made some more so if you were disappointed to miss out last weekend, they will be available from 10 am tomorrow at:
