We always get asked “are they real pearls?” when we’re at markets and in short the answer is yes.
But here’s a little more info for those wondering ✨ Freshwater pearls are genuine pearls formed inside freshwater mussels, rather than in the sea. They are generally more affordable than saltwater pearls because freshwater mussels can produce multiple pearls at once, while saltwater oysters typically produce fewer pearls per harvest. Freshwater pearls also tend to be easier and more efficient to cultivate. They develop naturally around a small nucleus and are made almost entirely of nacre, the same lustrous material that gives pearls their beautiful glow.
Each pearl is unique in shape, size, and colour, making freshwater pearls a beautiful symbol of natural individuality. 🤍✨
