New floral paintings incoming!
It’s been a while since I painted any florals. Maybe it’s living in the English countryside, or the fact that it’s spring, but I’ve been inspired to paint some of my favourites. The magnolia is well over before the dog roses bloom, but I love the contrast between the two.
Painting what you want to see rather than what exists in reality is the point of art though, is it not 😉

There’s a stretch of hedgerow on the walk to my studio that right now is full of campion, wild garlic, and cow parsley. It’s the same path I take every day, but lately I’ve been slowing down, just noticing how full of life and unruly it all is. Not just the flowers - so many bugs, bees, and tiny butterflies too.
Most studio mornings start quietly. A cup of tea and a crossword with breakfast, before the ten-minute walk down the lane. I put the kettle on again as soon as I get in, and sit with that second cup, just looking with fresh eyes at whatever I left behind the day before. It’s a small pause before anything begins, deciding what feels right to do next.
And then, the procrastination 😂. Without really thinking about it, I’ll tidy something. Move things around, clear a surface.
Maybe I just need to ease myself in gently before the real work begins!

This piece started during a stretch of really hot weather we had last summer.
It brought back memories of Summer holidays as a child, down at the seaside in South Wales with my family, grandparents, and cousins. Long days that felt like they would never end.
When I was painting it, I was completely in that place.
I kept thinking about the fairground at the top of the beach. The noise, the colour, the movement… and going on the rides with my grandpa. The waltzers, the water chute. The heady mix of excitement and complete safety.
It wasn’t something I set out to paint. It just kind of emerged, and a small series of six paintings came out.
Looking at it now, when so much is heavy in the world, it takes me straight back to that feeling of being young enough to just live in the moment. No overthinking, no pressure. Just being there and enjoying it.
I think maybe that’s why I needed to make it.

I’ve been very quiet on here for a while.
Not intentionally… just completely stretched in other directions.
I moved house, and at the same time, my website decided it needed rebuilding from the ground up. What I thought would be a small job turned into something that took far more time and headspace than I expected. Weeks went by, and I was very aware I’d disappeared a bit.
If I’m honest, I felt quite guilty about that. Like I should be keeping all the plates spinning… but I just didn’t have it in me to do everything at once. And it wasn’t just here I was missing - it was time in the studio too, which has felt even harder.
There were moments where it all felt a bit much. Briefly, I even wondered if it would be easier to step away from it altogether. But I know that’s not really an option for me - I love what I do too much, even when it feels challenging.
The great thing is, even while I’ve been buried in the technical side of things, there’s been a quiet build-up of new ideas happening in the back of my mind. Colours, textures, memories, … all feeding inspiration which is now sitting there waiting.
So I’m back, not with a perfectly polished plan, but with a real sense that I’m ready to get back into the studio and start painting again.
And that feels like the most important thing.
