We refurbished these side guide assemblies in our workshop, ready to return to service rather than being replaced as complete units.

Assemblies like these do a very physical job. Rollers, pivots, springs and other moving components are subjected to repeated movement and wear, so over time individual parts can deteriorate even when the main assembly remains perfectly serviceable.

That is where refurbishment makes commercial sense. By stripping the assemblies down, identifying the areas that need attention and repairing or remanufacturing the necessary components, we can restore the unit without the cost and lead time of sourcing a complete replacement.

If worn mechanical assemblies are becoming unreliable, don’t assume replacement is the only option. Send them to us, and we’ll assess whether they can be given another working life.

These components have nothing to do with each other, but they arrived in our workshop with exactly the same problem: replacements were needed, and there were no drawings to manufacture them from.

The first is a cylinder clevis, which we reverse-engineered from the original worn component. The second set of components are drive hubs, manufactured in the same way by taking the critical dimensions and features from the existing parts and recreating them.

For maintenance teams looking after older or specialist machinery, reverse engineering often earns its keep.
A manufacturer may no longer support the equipment, drawings can disappear over the years, or a replacement component may simply no longer be available off the shelf.

If the original part still gives us enough to work from, we can often recreate it and help keep the machinery it belongs to in service.

These phosphor bronze wear plates are a good example of components designed with maintenance in mind.

In machinery where surfaces move against one another, wear has to occur somewhere. A replaceable wear plate provides a sacrificial surface, taking that punishment instead of letting it damage the larger, potentially far more expensive parts of the machine.

The different profiles, slots, countersunk holes and machined features in this batch are all produced to suit where each plate will sit and how it needs to perform once installed.

It might seem counterintuitive to manufacture something knowing it will eventually wear out, but that is precisely the point. Replacing a wear plate is a much better option than repairing or replacing the machinery it protects.

This partially completed drive shaft is being manufactured in our workshop for a customer operating in the aggregate industry.

In an environment where machinery is expected to handle heavy loads, abrasive materials and demanding production schedules, the components driving that equipment need to be made for the conditions they will actually face.

The stepped diameters, mounting fl**ge and fixing points you can see here are already taking shape, with further machining still to come before the shaft is ready to go into service.

For us, this is what precision engineering is really about.
Not simply producing a component to a drawing, but manufacturing something that will ultimately become part of a much bigger operation where reliability matters every working day.

A work in progress!

These bearing housings are partway through manufacture in our Swansea workshop, with the main turning operations complete and the next stages still to come.

It is a useful reminder that the finished component only ever tells part of the story.

Jobs like these move through a series of machining operations, with dimensions, bores, faces and features produced in sequence to ensure everything is where it needs to be when the housing is eventually assembled with the bearing and fitted to the machinery.

Showing work at this stage also gives a better idea of what happens behind the scenes at Cross Engineering. Not everything arrives on the bench looking finished. Our engineers get it there through experience and a carefully planned manufacturing process.

We’ll share the completed bearing housings once they are finished.

These bronze bushes are ready to be fitted into bearing housings, where they will provide a durable, replaceable bearing surface between moving components.

That replaceable element is important. Over time, wear is inevitable in machinery, but a correctly manufactured bush is designed to take that wear, helping to protect the more substantial housing around it.

When the bush eventually reaches the end of its service life, you can replace it rather than potentially sacrificing the complete assembly.

It is a relatively simple component, but one that can make a significant difference to the longevity, maintenance and reliability of industrial machinery.

From one-off replacement parts to batches of precision-machined components, we manufacture to suit the application.

It is always interesting to see where the components we manufacture eventually end up, and this latest project for Pembrokeshire-based kinetic sculptor Ivan Black is certainly one of the more unusual.

Ivan’s work brings together art, mathematics and engineering to create sculptures where movement is central to the finished piece. His commissions can be found around the world, including works for Adobe in Salt Lake City, Nobu Hotel in London and the Royal Botanic Gardens in Ontario.

For this latest large-scale kinetic sculpture, we are manufacturing a range of the individual components here at Cross Engineering.

We precision-cut the bronze plate on our abrasive waterjet before forming, fabricating, and laser-welding it, while machining the stainless steel shafts, bolts, and bearing components to create the mechanisms that will allow the finished sculpture to move as Ivan intended.

Projects like this are a great example of what happens when creative ideas meet precision engineering. Ivan designs the movement and form, while our team helps turn those ideas into accurately manufactured components that can work together in the finished sculpture.

We are looking forward to seeing this one fully assembled and in motion.

This huge nail was physically pulled from a historic structure here in Swansea and brought to Cross Engineering for one simple reason: replacements are needed, and the original drawings disappeared decades ago.

More than a century of service has certainly left its mark. The corrosion, worn point and irregular surface tell part of its story, but crucially, enough of the original geometry remains.

The large square head, threaded section, shaft and distinctive forged point all give our engineers something to work from.

So this rusty old nail is now doing another job.
It’s our drawing.

We’re taking measurements directly from the original, interpreting what has changed through more than 100 years of wear and corrosion, and reverse-engineering new components to suit the existing structure.

We can’t reveal the project just yet, although some Swansea history buffs might recognise a clue or two. What we can say is that this is only one of a wide range of components we’re helping to recreate for something very special.

For us, it’s reverse engineering at its best. No drawing. No replacement sitting on a shelf. Just the original component and the engineering knowledge needed to give it another 100 years.

If obsolete or undocumented components are standing in the way of a repair, restoration or rebuild, talk to our team.
