Angus Grant Art

Angus Grant Art Angus Grant is a painter and craftsman, based in the Cairngorms National Park. In particular, his paintings feature lochs, mountains and wildlife.

His work is inspired by this beautiful location and the changing light on the landscape. Angus’s love of fishing is also an important part of his recent collections. He loves to explore the lochs of the Cairngorms and beyond, often finding inspiration instead of fish. Angus says: “Time spent walking or fishing is never wasted and constantly throws up new ideas and imagery to use in my pictures.”

Angus initially studied art at Central St Martins School of Art, before going on to study jewellery design at Middlesex University, where he specialised in Japanese-style carving and acrylic. He taught Western Jewellery Design at the National Institute of Jewellery Design in Gudgerat, where he also learned about traditional goldsmithing. After university, he worked for jewellery designer Kirt Holmes in London. He returned to the Highlands in the early 2000s to start his own jewellery business. Angus currently teaches art and design at Grantown Grammar School and tutors the Spey Art Group, where he runs various art workshops.

The yellow books are out - it must be time for North East Open Studios again.

I'm taking part for the third year running and looking forward to chatting about paintings, drawing, airbrushing and more. You can find me in the book at Venue 17, based inside a studio in the Spey Bank Studio.

Recently, I've been working on more ink drawings of fish - a favourite subject of mine.

My favourite place... We say this all the time here.

But this past two weeks, it has been hard to watch it all burning.

It will take a while for the grasses to grow back, it will take longer for the heather and shrubs to return. It will take longer for the trees to recover and for the multitudes of beasties, birds and animals to return. But eventually they will.

I sincerely hope that it will be even longer before I have to look again at one of my favourite places in flames and tell myself that "it will be fine". That’s why I’m sharing the paintings to celebrate the landscape rather than the pictures of fire and blackened earth.

Watching the resilience of the Dava as the moor recovers after last year's fire has been uplifting but I am well aware it will be a long time before these views return...

Sending many thanks to all those out there fighting to stop the flames - they are friends and neighbours and we are so grateful.

Hope you are all having a great summer so far… we have seen lots of smiling faces round the town.

Our Lochs and Rivers exhibition continues this week and our next featured artwork is by our very own artist, Angus Grant Art

For all our new followers, Angus is a painter and craftsman, based in the Cairngorms National Park. His work focusses on the changing light on the landscape, in particular, the lochs and mountains of the region.

Loch Morlich has featured in his most recent paintings. This is a loch that is a great favourite of Angus’s – he has spent many hours on the waters over the years, whether fishing or just paddling in his kayak.

This view of the loch will be well known to regular visitors to Loch Morlich. It depicts the inlet at the western end, where you get your first glimpse across the water to the mountains. A beautiful view, giving a sneak peek of the beauty beyond.

This is the result of a few days at the easel at Spey Bank Studio during Grantown Open Studios. It's been great to have a chance to paint and even better to chat about my work.

Many thanks to everyone who visited over the weekend to support me and the gallery. And well done to Stevi Benson Paper Art, whose work was much admired - we were delighted to see couple of pieces heading off to new homes. If you didn't catch it, don't worry, Stevi's artwork will be on show for a bit longer.
