Stone Secrets #34 - Why Some Natural Stone Lets Light Through.

Stone is solid. Heavy. Dense.

Probably the last material you'd expect light to pass through.

But some natural stones have a rather extraordinary secret.

They're translucent.

And when you introduce light, something magical happens.

Natures Hidden Beauty.

Certain stones, particularly onyx, some marbles and quartzites, have crystalline structures that allow light to pass through them.

The result can be spectacular.

Veins that were barely visible suddenly come alive.

Colours become richer. Patterns appear deeper. Details hidden within the stone are revealed.

A beautiful slab becomes something extraordinary.

Not every natural stone is suitable for backlighting. Some are too opaque, while others allow light through unevenly.

Thickness also matters.

Generally, the thinner the stone, the more light can pass through.

And because natural stone varies, even two slabs of the same material can behave very differently.

That's why selecting and testing the actual slabs is so important.

Delaying the plumber - The call nobody wants to make!

Building work involves a lot of individual companies on the whole, that all need coordinating, and therefore they rely on those below them in the sequence.

If any one of these do not deliver when they are scheduled, this has a huge knock on effect to all those that follow. This is not only really annoying, but it also requires the one thing that everyone hates.

The bad news phone call!

Sorry Mr Plumber who has been booked for months due to his lack of availability, the worktop has been delayed so the kitchen will not be ready for you tomorrow. What's that? You can't rebook for another 2 weeks! That is bad news.

Quartz Worktop Guarantees - Why You Need to be Careful

Most quartz manufacturers will offer long guarantees against their materials which is great. Anything from 10 to 25 years, so you are well covered.

Or are you?

A lot of people don't realise this only covers the material. It doesn't cover any fabrication work. For this you need to look at the guarantee the fabricator is offering. This can vary much more and with some will start with zero.

If this is the case and your worktop suddenly cracks, what happens. The quartz manufacturer will visit to assess if it is a warranty case. If it is they will provide enough new slabs to replace your worktop. But that's all. You will then need to pay for it to be fabricated which equates to around 60% of the total cost.

Worst than this, if the quartz manufacturer assesses that this is not a warranty case, and this is down to the fabricators error, then you will be liable for 100% of the costs.

Utility Rooms - The Unsung Hero

You have friends over and you are enjoying your lovely new kitchen/diner space. It's made for entertaining and creating those memories you will retell for years to come.

Can you help me? I've been let down by a supplier.

This was a call I received from a house builder. Everything was lined up to complete the sale of the house, the only thing missing was the worktop. It had been promised for a few weeks, but not arrived.

Lots of excuses, but no tops.

OK, I said. Firstly, don't worry. There will be a solution, we just need to find it. They were not too far away so they came into the office to look at the options. Over a game of snooker.

We are not an ordinary stone company. Our thinking has never belonged inside a box. Just because it hasn't been done, doesn't mean it can't be done. We may just need to look at it from a different direction.

STONE SECRETS #33 - Why The Finish Matters As Much As The Stone.

You've found the perfect slab of marble.

The colour is beautiful.

The veining is exactly what you wanted.

But there's another decision that can completely change how that stone looks and feels.

✨ The finish.

And its something that's often overlooked.

Polished – Bold and Beautiful.

A polished finish reflects light, enhances colour and brings out the depth of the veining. It's the classic marble look. Elegant, dramatic and full of life. But on marble, scratches and acid etching can be more noticeable against that glossy surface.

Honed – Soft and Understated.

Honing creates a smooth, matt or satin finish. The same stone can suddenly feel softer, calmer and more contemporary. It's particularly beautiful in kitchens and bathrooms. Etching can be less noticeable than on polished marble, although honing doesn't prevent it.

Brushed or leathered – Texture and Character.

24 Hour Turnaround - How it is possible?

Quality projects take time to complete. And we all appreciate this. But occasionally speed is of the essence. A worktop needs to be completed asap for a mortgage sign off. To reduce the time a client is left without a kitchen. Another trade window is limited. The kitchen payment is dependant on it. There are endless reasons.

And we will always oblige if we can. 90% of kitchen worktops are made within the day anyway, so it is just the timings that need to be aligned to pull this off without compromising the quality of the work.

So how do we do it?

We arrive to template the worktop in the morning. This is done with lasers these days which create an electronic file of the worktop. The benefit of this is that once it has been done our team can email it back to the factory.

This is then processed and ready to go. But of course first of all it will be sent to the client for their approval. A quick response here can make all the difference. But once approved, it is off to production. By the time our team return to HQ from the project they have just templated, the worktop will already be in production.

The worktop will then be quality control and packed ready for installation the next morning. Project dependant, it is even possible to get it out for installation that same afternoon. If it is a simple worktop and not too far away, we can get this down to 12 hours. Uncompromised!

So a fast turnaround from template to complete can be achieved without any compromise on the quality. We just need some early communication and a little forward planning.

Sunday is a day of rest!

Do you remember when it actually was? When there were next to no shops open at all. The only thing to do was hang out with the family while the Sunday roast was cooking, then enjoy the best meal of the week.
