Repen Limestone Bathroom - Tunbridge Wells (Royal don't you know!)

I had a call from the past earlier this year, from a guy who used to service my car before I went grey! Well, maybe not quite that long. But anyway, he knew I did stone and wanted my advice. The joys of village life.

Of course I helped him with everything he wanted to know, like an open book, the same as I would with anyone. Almost anyone. I am far from being a salesman, I just love stone, especially the natural variety. But he liked my ideas and we proceeded to design his bathroom with him.

He loved it. Being bespoke it all fitted exactly how it should, with intention. He ended up with exactly what he wanted, what he had imagined. Which is of course only possible if you truly understand the customer. I do.

Beautifully simple detail - but spot on! 🎯

I still love getting the pictures through from site every time we finish a plot. They remind me just how extraordinary we are at doing the ordinary. Something that takes a lot of care and attention. More than you imagine.

Our team always take pictures of every completed piece of work. Not just for the desk dwellers to check, but also to show the client if needed. Many times in the past we have had our work damaged by others after finishing. A few times by managers checking to make sure it's all good!!

Like everything in life, you live and learn. Most of our systems in place come from an experience. We find this is the best way to avoid issues going forward. And we've been doing this for a long time!

It all helps to make us easy to work with! ✨ 💛

Stone Secrets #16 - Why The Best Stone Projects Have The Fewest Joints

One of the easiest ways to identify a truly exceptional stone installation is also one of the simplest.

Look at the joints.

Or more specifically, look for how few there are.

The world's best stone projects aren't defined by how much stone they use.

They're defined by how seamlessly that stone has been integrated into the space.

Joints interrupt the design.

No matter how carefully it's executed, a joint interrupts the flow of the material.

The fewer joints there are, the more the stone can be appreciated as a single architectural element.

Large panels create a more luxurious feel.

One reason luxury hotels, high-end bathrooms and premium kitchens often feel different is the use of larger stone panels.

Instead of seeing multiple pieces joined together, you experience the material as one continuous surface.

The stone becomes the feature rather than the installation.

Simplicity is often harder to achieve.

Ironically, the installations that appear simplest are often the most challenging.

Larger pieces require:

🟡 Better planning
🟡 Skilled fabrication

The cleaner the finished appearance, the more work has usually gone into achieving it.

Kitchen Designers Comfort Blanket

Over the years I have found that designers find things that work, so they use them again. The more they use them, the more of a comfort blanket they become. They understand them and they know they work. There's no risk.

Which is great of course, and the benefit of using an experienced designer. But it can also hinder. A young fresh designer is keen to make their mark, and does so by often pushing boundaries. If they are allowed to. Let them. It's great to see another perspective. We should always be looking to learn.

Then a whole other level is to talk to the stone guy. See what ideas they have, what they've done before and what is possible. Or to see if an idea of yours is possible. Designers too, open up and collaborate. We will produce a better end produce with better teamwork and collaboration. It's more fun too!

Consistently Good - Day In Day Out

We set a high standard for our team to achieve. This is for our own benefit and for that of our customers.

For us, it keeps life interesting. Always trying to find ways to improve. Close enough is never good enough. Keeps the focus. Gives us purpose. It's never 'just a job'.

For the customer, they get a beautiful worktop. This is a major purchase and as many as we fit, we never forget that. This may be the 20th worktop we've fitted this week, but this could be our customers first one ever, and the largest purchase they've made in years. It's important.

Everything we do is aimed towards customer satisfaction. It's how I have always looked at the business.

It's not rocket science. If we keep the customer happy, they will recommend us to their friends and around we go.

It's not always easy to get people to spread the word because bad news travels way faster than good. They say if you do a great job, the client will tell 4 or 5 people. If you do a bad job that goes up to 24 or 25 people!

Stone Secrets #15 - Why Stone Variation Should Be Embraced.

One of the questions we hear most often is:

"Will my stone look exactly like the sample?"

The honest answer?

Probably not.

And that's actually one of the best things about natural stone.

No two pieces are ever the same

Natural stone was formed over millions of years.

Every vein, colour change, fossil and movement within the slab is a result of nature's own process.

Unlike manufactured materials, natural stone doesn't come from a production line.

Each slab is unique.

And that's what makes it special.

These differences are what give stone its personality.

Perfect uniformity can feel artificial.

Manufactured materials are designed to be predictable.

Designers can work from one 100 x 100mm sample when specifying for 100 worktops knowing they will all be the same.
