Tension! - Why Drainer Grooves don't do exactly what it says on the tin!

Every now and then I still get complaints that a customers drainer grooves aren't 'working'. The truth is they are doing exactly what they are designed to do, it's just not what the name suggest.

The surface tension of the water, which is increased when it is in a curved channel, holds the water in place pretty well. This prevents the water from running down the groove once the volume of water drops to a certain level.

But what the grooves are actually there for is to prevent your clean washing up walking itself across the worktop by breaking the seal created. When you put a freshly washed up bowl onto a smooth surface, the warm bowl heats the air trapped inside it making it expand. This lifts the bowl slightly and turns it into a hovercraft. Off it goes with a mind of its own.

The grooves break this seal and allow the warm expanded air to escape. This keeps the bowl in exactly the position to placed it. Bowl saved, job done!

You even see this in a bathroom on a vertical wall. It isn't until you wipe it with a squeegee after a shower that you realise just how much water is left hanging on the wall. All by the magic of surface tension.

And in both cases, when the water dries it will leave behind a deposit of minerals. Limescale! To avoid this build up, just make sure you keep it as dry as you can.

In a bathroom this can be a bit of a faff. But beautiful things take some looking after. My wife told me this. So for the 60 seconds it takes, the pay off makes it more than worth it.

Bank Holiday Monday - Good or Bad?

When I was younger and work meant everything, I used to hate Bank Holidays. It meant one less working day, one less day of income. Christmas was the worst because December turned into a 3 week month. Nightmare!

These days I love a Bank Holiday. Family croquet being one of my favourite non-work pastimes currently. With efficiencies learnt over the years, I can still fit in the same amount of work in the shorter week, while maxing out my relaxation.

I have always been good at relaxation, but the relaxation of my clients. Not having to worry about anything more than necessary on your project is a must. There's enough to worry about without adding worktop worries to the list.

If you want to shorten your project worry list - come and talk to us! ✨ πŸ’›

Love the look of marble, but it worries me!

This is a perfectly normal concern for a lot of people. Marble looks awesome we know, but it does take a little more understanding and a routine to keep it looking good.

If you love the look but want it to be as simple to maintain as possible, then quartz is the material for you. Today the designs are getting closer to the real thing than ever. The only real difference is the lack of imperfections.

This particular client was exactly of this mindset. And in this kitchen it looks fantastic. They don't need to worry about using the wrong cleaner or wiping up a drunken spillage at once. They can just relax in the knowledge everything will be fine.

Each to their own. There is a perfect material for everyone. To find yours come and pick my brain!

Happy Sunday! ✨ πŸ’›

Luck doesn't come into a great job!

The bigger the company gets, the harder it is to insure consistency. With many big company cultures the work just becomes a job, a means to an end.

You should never have to rely on getting the 'good' fitters. You should be able to relax knowing that they are all as good as each other. That it isn't just a job to them, that they genuinely care about doing a good job. A culture where snagging is considered an insult. That something is wrong. You want a place that doesn't accept this should ever happen.

You want your home to mean as much to the team fitting your worktop as it does to you. Where close enough is never good enough.

Then you can relax. Let the magic start to happen. The good feelings start to flow and the smile exploding uncontrollably across your face. Job done!

For the best feelings with the least stress. ✨ πŸ’›

Fireplace Freedom πŸ•ŠοΈ

There are many options with stone. Designs, textures, finishes, colours, real flame or bio ethanol. The options are really endless.

Marble Upgrades

This was a really interesting project. A new concept to me at the time, a development that was built to let. The apartments were pretty compact but the residents had some amazing areas that they could rent to entertain.

Just like properties around the World that want to perceive a sense of luxury and exclusivity, marble was included in the design. One of my favourites as it happens, Fior di Bosco. A stone that looks like a 1960's black and white arial photograph to me. The longer I look the more I can see. Small villages, rivers, hills and roads. Beautiful.

Marble Bathrooms - Make Sure You Understand Them First!

All the best properties in the World, both commercial and private, feature marble. And for very good reason. It is beautiful and screams class.

BUT. You must understand the product before you go ahead and order one, or buy a property that includes one. They are not difficult to look after, but they are easy to damage.

Marble and limescale for example are basically the same product, one being a little older than the other. If you use a product that says it removes limescale on a marble, it will literally remove the marble face. This then looks like a white mark and it can happen in under a minute.

With good guidance and the right products you can keep your marble looking great for years with just a little effort. It really is simple. But the returns awesome!

If you are looking to invest in this beautiful product and would like to know how to best protect your investment, then buy me a coffee and ask. ✨ πŸ’›

Each to their own - Stir your emotions!

Any design in your home, including your worktop, or bathroom, should stir your emotions and make you smile. The same design may be hated by others, but this is not important. It is yours and must resonate with you.

I always think designs fall into different categories. Those that don't excite anyone, but equally are not hated by anyone. A neutral. A great choice if you need to appeal to as many as possible. Such as one a developer may choose.

The other is much more marmite. Some will love it and others will hate it. Much more divisive. You will half the number it appeals to, but the emotions generated are more extreme. A choice for someone who has no plans of moving anytime soon.

Often it comes down to how brave you are, introvert or extrovert. But ultimately to me your choices have to make you smile first and foremost.

Which are you? What would you choose? ✨ πŸ’›
