A well-designed bathroom is about so much more than how it looks. It needs to work for you, your lifestyle and the way you use the space every day.
Taking the time to plan properly and invest in the right fixtures and fittings is key to creating a well-designed space that will stand the test of time.
Here are a few things I always consider when planning a bathroom:
• Layout first — Choose a layout that works best for you, and consider where your existing plumbing is located. Moving plumbing and utilities can be costly, so it’s worth thinking this through early on.
• Storage — Good storage makes all the difference to keeping a bathroom practical and clutter-free. Built-in niches are a great way to create useful storage in a shower or above a bath without taking up extra space.
• Lighting — A combination of functional task lighting and softer ambient lighting can completely change the feel of a room.
• Materials and finishes — Consider how tiles, worktops, brassware and paint colours work together, as well as how easy they are to maintain. If you live in a hard water area, limescale can also affect your choice of fixtures and fittings.
• Budget and planning — Establish your priorities and budget early on. It’s worth investing in quality items such as brassware and showers, which get plenty of use. Remember to allow for installation, labour and any unexpected costs that might crop up during a renovation.
Taking the time to plan before committing to products and finishes will help you create a bathroom that looks beautifully finished, works well for everyday life and stands the test of time.
