The annual Chelsea Rare Book Fair is in full swing! Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association 📜 📚

Some highlights from our visit to the Asian Art in London Launch Party at The Lavery last night. Asian Art In London 🥂✨

The 29th edition of Asian Art in London takes place from 29th October to 10th November 2026. Asian Art in London promotes galleries and auction houses selling exceptional Asian art, ranging from antique to contemporary and encompassing India, Central Asia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Korea and South East Asia.

The participating BADA members are Eskenazi Ltd, Runjeet Singh and Slaats Fine Art.

From the BADA Friends Director:

Last week the BADA Friends visited the College of Arms in the City of London. Dr Clive Cheesman, whose official title is Norroy & Ulster King of Arms and Earl Marshal’s Secretary, was the guide for the evening. The group heard about the history behind the building, the profession of herald or officer of arms, the practice, law and history of heraldry and the work that the College does today. Many questions were asked by fascinated guests, which certainly kept Dr Cheesman on his toes. The evening ended with light refreshments, which gave the group further time to discuss the complex world of heraldry.

We are delighted to welcome our new BADA member, Winsor Birch. Winsor Birch

Winsor Birch specialises in British and European Art, encompassing paintings, works on paper and sculpture from the 18th - 20th centuries. They have a dedicated focus on works by British, Scottish and Irish artists from the Victorian period through to the mid-20th century, while also presenting important works by British and European masters from Sir Joshua Reynolds to Camille Pissarro.

Winsor Birch was founded by Grant Ford (pictured here on the left), an independent fine art specialist, advisor and senior picture specialist for the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow. He was formerly Senior Director at Sotheby’s, with a 30-year career leading the auction house’s British & Irish Art Post-1850 department.

Charlie Minter (pictured here on the right) joined Winsor Birch in 2025 after 15 years as a specialist within Sotheby’s British & Irish Art department and as a Director at a leading UK modern and contemporary gallery. Together, they bring decades of experience, expertise and a passion for their field, working with first-time and seasoned collectors, in addition to institutional clients.

Through Grant Ford Ltd, Grant Ford also offers an independent art advisory business that provides a comprehensive range of services to help clients to navigate the art market.

A small oval Regency rolled-card or filigree picture in a mahogany and box-wood frame, from the collection of BADA member Tim Bowen Antiques. Tim Bowen

The picture is formed by card or paper which is coiled or crimped into shape and used to build up the diorama type picture.

From the BADA Friends Director:

Just a couple of days left to dash to the Royal Academy in London to see the exhibition about the Victorian artist Richard Dadd (1817–1886), who was a student at the RA. In his early years as an artist, he went on an exhausting tour of the Eastern Mediterranean, and it was on this tour that Dadd began to experience delusions. On his return to England and during one of these psychotic episodes, he sadly murdered his father. Dadd then spent the rest of his life in mental hospitals, and the exhibition reflects this life journey, from works in his early years as a student to keenly observed watercolours from his overseas tour to portraits of the doctors who cared for him and to his final paintings whilst in Broadmoor, where he died. A moving, disturbing and wonderful exhibition not to be missed.

‘Fragments of a colossal statue at the Memnonium, Thebes’ by David Roberts, R.A., from the collection of BADA member Karen Taylor Fine Art. Karen Taylor

This drawing captures the monumental ruins of the temple now known as the Ramesseum. It is the temple from which another colossal head was taken to the British Museum, where it inspired Shelley’s famous sonnet Ozymandias.

The drawing was executed on the return journey when David Roberts, R.A., was on the west bank of the river at Luxor from 3 to 5 December 1838. Roberts noted in his journal: ‘I have been very industrious today, thanks to a Thunder Storm, a most uncommon thing in this part of the world - The sun was quite obscured and the peals of thunder were very loud accompanied with rain.... Made four large coloured sketches two of the Memnonium and two of Medinet Habou.’ (Eastern Journal, National Library of Scotland).
