This is what a family island looks like in real life. Three can sit on one side with a drink or their homework, while one, sometimes two, cook on the other, everyone facing each other instead of a wall. Two sides, two jobs, and nobody reaching across anybody. It was planned around how this family actually spends their evenings. Who usually takes the stools in your house?

Every kitchen has one appliance nobody really wants to look at. Here it was given an oak-lined shelf at eye height, inside a cupboard that also holds the toaster, the coffee machine and the breakfast bowls. The sockets sit inside too, so everything stays plugged in and ready. Open the doors in the morning, close them when you're done.

Ask this homeowner for their favourite detail and they'll point straight at the splashback. Instead of a flat line of tiles, the stone rises in a gentle ogee curve, framing the tap and the cooker like a little archway. It's easy to wipe, it protects the wall exactly where the splashing happens, and it gives the room a touch of old-house charm. One detail worth stealing for your own sink wall.

From the kitchen, all you see is a pretty arch. Step through it and there's a whole working pantry: deep green cupboards, open shelves for the jars you use every day, and a long run of worktop where the toaster, the bread and the half-finished baking can stay out. The mess lives here, so the main kitchen never has to look busy. Would you give up a bit of space for a pantry like this?

Family living was the whole brief here, so nothing in this room works on its own. The stools are tucked along the side of the island, both sides can be used at the same time, and the dining table carries on at the far end, right by the garden windows. Cooking, homework and catching up all happen in one long room, and nobody gets left out of the conversation. Would you choose one big open space or separate rooms?

A quick tour of our latest project, where the cleverest parts are the ones that move out of your way. The dishwasher pulls out as a drawer, so there's no bending down to the floor, and the oven door slides away underneath instead of hanging open at knee height.

Look at the tall cabinet on the left. Its doors are hinged in the middle, so they fold back on themselves and never swing out into the room. While they're open, the kettle, the toaster and the glasses are all within reach and nobody has to walk around a door. Close them after breakfast and the crumbs vanish too. It's a detail we love, and one worth copying.

An is where everyone ends up standing, usually with their back to it and a cup of tea in hand. So this kitchen was planned around it: a mantel above to frame it, drawers beside it for the pans, and a curved peninsula a few steps away where people can lean and chat without getting under the cook's feet. That rounded end is kind to hips, too. Timeless really is the word.

Most cooks spend dinner time facing a wall. This one faces the garden. The hob and both ovens were built into the island, so everything hot is within one step and the view through the glass doors comes free with every meal. Guests take the chairs opposite, away from the heat but close enough to chat. Would you agree the cook deserves the best view in the house?

Four favourites from this project, and they share one talent: nothing is seen until it's needed. The hob sits flush in the island and pulls the steam downwards, the fridge and freezer hide behind cabinet doors, the breakfast cabinet closes on the toaster crumbs, and an oak cutlery tray was made to measure for the client's own knives and forks. A calm kitchen, with all the clever parts kept out of sight.
