A little montage of the occasional table I was making Thursday/Friday this week.
Mounted on a face plated the are 480mmØ the capacity of the lathe is 510mmØ so I’ve had to remove a lot of bulk on the table saw.
They still weigh around 50kg on mounting!
Turned using my free standing rest starting at around 200rpm up to around 800rpm as the become balanced.
Making the tops dead flat is probably the hardest cut and takes a lot of patience.
Apologies for the singing on a few of the clips, I get a little lost in it sometimes.

Here’s what’s been taking up a lot of space in the shop this week.
A test build of two snooker cue racks. One static and the other revolving. Off to my clients now for finishing.
These have been a very interesting job with some real problem solving.

Another batch of discs here, at least they’re getting smaller!
These are mounted and driven by fiction. The workpiece is drilled 38mm and the revolving pipe centre automatically centres it and presses against the tightened chuck jaws to provide the drive. Another illustration of creative work holding.
Video speeded up from around 5 minutes.

A lot of Oak discs going through the shop at the moment.
Yes, that’s a skew doing most of the work.
Used in this way is OK as long as things are kept sharp (and why wouldn’t it) and the rest is kept close for maximum control.
The first video shows the full process here speeded up from around 7 minutes.
The second is a clip at 2x speed.
The finish from the tool as always says it all!
Oak, 340mmØ spinning at around 900rpm.

A batch of very swanky feet here going to a very swanky hotel in Scotland.
This is one of two batches of these feet and I’m under the cosh a little so didn’t get chance to take any Process video. I’ll do better in the next batch!
Oak, 115mmØ, 100mm high.

I’ve shown these a few times but I’m making another batch of ‘listening stick’ heads and I think it’s a good illustration of the use of a jamb chuck in production turning.

The ‘Jubilee Clip’ is there to stop any splitting of the chuck, not for any tightening propose.

The tape on my fingers is not due to injury, I put it on to stop my fingers becoming dry due to all the sanding.

The lathe must be stopped for loading and unloading, no ‘live loading’ on a job like this.

The undercut is to form a trumpet shape and is not possible on the copy-lathe.

I am aware that I’m cutting ‘wrong grain’ and these should be cut from centre outwards but a nice sharp gouge does the job.

These are used in the utility industries to listen for water leaks.

All three video are speeded up from around 2:30 minutes each.
Oak, 80mmØ spinning ate 1200rpm with the rest around 5mm above centre.
Mainly my 5/8” round skew and a small 1/4” bowl gouge.

Another reproduction newel in the lathe this morning.
A beautiful profile made to match the other original newels in the property.
Sapele, 95mm square.

If you’re not confident with a skew, a nice sharp roughing gouge is almost (but not quite) as good.
Pulling it backwards here to ‘plane’ a nice long taper in tulipwood.
90mmØ x 1200 long spinning at around 1000rpm.
Video speeded up by around 2x.

One of a pair of 150mmØ columns in Oak.
The video shows how I can use my long tool rest as a guide for keeping things parallel.
Just my 5/4” roughing gouge and a little tickle with my skew at the end.
Spinning at around 600rpm to start, ramping up to around 1000rpm at the finish.
The video is speeded up from around 7 minutes.
