A bit of rain wasn’t going to stop this lot finding out where their food comes from! 🌧️🌱
It was lovely to welcome Ruby Class from Clehonger CofE Primary School to Lower Blakemere Farm. They were interested, full of questions and very happy to get close to the soil — worms included!
We explored what’s beneath our feet and what we’re trying to achieve: more organic matter and a thriving community of fungi, bacteria and other soil life to help grow our crops.
We saw the drill and the cattle, and talked about selling beef nose to tail — using the whole beast and showing proper respect for the animal by making every cut count. There were worms to feel, too, and a chance to see the Harvest Project in action with their quails.
These visits matter. Food makes far more sense when you can stand in the field, meet the animals and talk to the people producing it. And the children’s questions give us plenty to think about as well!
A big thank you to Flo from Herefordshire Food Alliance for organising it, and to the children and teachers for getting stuck in.
If your school would like to visit a real, working farm, get in touch. Farmer Phil’s always happy to talk soil — you may just need to tell him when the bus is leaving! 🚜
