Thank you to for inviting David to speak at the in Harrogate yesterday.

Through his talk "The Accidental Art Installer", David shared the human stories behind the Art he has installed, answered his most-asked client questions and offered practical Art install tips and advice throughout, followed by a lively Q&A to a sold-out audience.

We really enjoyed meeting everyone and I'm sure we'll be back soon!

The current exhibition at the Mercer: Aesthetica Art Prize 20 is on until 6 September and we highly recommend a visit to see these stunning works, part of a series of exhibitions across Yorkshire including

40 kilograms of taxidermy. One wall. Two of installers.

One of the privileges of this job is the variety. Not everything we hang comes in a frame.

This buffalo head now overlooks the dining table in a period room that was made for it. The scale is extraordinary in person and the photo of it hung on the wall doesn't do it justice.

Getting it there required more than just the right fixings. The backboard already had holes from a previous installation, which meant masonry screws directly into the solid brick wall were the right choice.

But before any fixings came the fun part, David and Nick having to manoeuvre 40+ kilos of buffalo into position without damaging or dropping it.

A Homage to Haring.

Exhibition prints. Skateboard decks. One staircase.

When this client came to us with a collection of prints alongside a series of Haring skate decks, putting them all in separate rooms would have sold them short.

The staircase was the right home. But staircase hangs are unforgiving. You're not just planning for one viewing angle, you're mapping sight lines from three: the foot of the stairs looking up, the landing looking down, and eye level as you climb through the space. A composition that only works from one position isn't a composition at all.

The skate decks, although not pieces by Haring himself, became the spacing mechanism that gave the whole arrangement its visual rhythm and texture. Art and utility, working together. Very Haring.

"Art is for everybody." — and it should be hung properly.

Same-sized frames? The obvious approach is a straight line, right? Centre them all at the same height and call it done.

Clean, yes. Engaging? Not really.

This vinyl collection tells a story. From the first album the couple bought when they met, to records they played to their kids, to classic covers from bands they love.

We used a staggered grid approach, offsetting the frames vertically to create visual rhythm whilst maintaining the overall structure. It lets you see individual albums without losing the cohesive grouping. Your eye moves across the wall rather than just scanning a horizontal line.

The difference between functional and considered. Same frames, better composition.

One of our favourite installs. The Rainbow Spine at headquarters, installed nine years ago.

Each coloured card represented a shade from Moo's product range. The client wanted something creative that celebrated their offering, and designer Felix Ackermann delivered this suspended sculpture - a spine of colour cards hung from a white steel trellis.

Our job was working out the mathematical spacing to ensure the visual flow worked down the full length of the corridor and from every angle in the space. Once the maths was sorted, installation was straightforward using S hooks from the trellis.

Simple idea, effective ex*****on led to a stunning visual.

Two of Harland Miller's iconic Penguin book cover pieces, now holding court in a Yorkshire home.

As a proud Yorkshireman, this one resonated with our client - and with us, being based in West Yorkshire ourselves.

The larger piece is substantial in both scale and weight. The aluminium frame meant a split baton had to be used to share the load across the wall. The space was tight but this was the only wall that could take it.

Miller's work bridges that gap between high art and popular culture. The distressed Penguin book aesthetic, the provocative titles, the unapologetic Northern pride.

No shame in being a Dirty Northern Bastard.

Not every installation involves frames. These individually powder-coated aluminium bars were commissioned for 's breakout space, with the colour progression designed by the client to complement the furniture.

Before a single piece went on the wall, we laid out the entire sequence on the floor. This is standard practice for us, whether it's framed artworks or sculptural installations.

Each piece needed mounting at precise intervals to create the gradient effect. One piece slightly off-centre and the whole composition loses its balance. No room for eyeballing it.

This bold goldfinch greets visitors when entering this contemporary new build.

Double-height spaces present a particular challenge. The artwork needs to work from multiple viewing angles, standing at the bottom looking up and viewing from the landing above. Get the placement wrong and you end up with it only looking correct from one viewpoint and too high/low from the other.

When art makes a journey of 4,000+ miles from Canada to the UK, you know it's something special.

These magnificent carved wooden sculptures, each weighing over 40kg, now frame this feature wall with perfect symmetry and dramatic presence.

Working with pieces of this weight requires careful planning. Split batons were installed to distribute the load evenly across the wall, ensuring these substantial artworks are secured safely for years to come.

HMA tip: Heavy artworks benefit from being considered during the initial room design. When you plan the space with artworks in mind, for both positioning and installation, you achieve seamless integration where art and space work as one.
