How lovely is this?
An early 19th-century volume from The Naturalist's Library, the celebrated series edited by Scottish naturalist Sir William Jardine.
First published in the 1830s, the series is renowned for its beautiful coloured illustrations of birds and animals from around the world.
The magnificent bird pictured here is Sonnerat's Wild C**k (Gallus sonneratii), also known as the grey junglefowl, native to India.
Complete with its original coloured plates, this is a wonderful survivor from the early days of popular illustrated natural history.
Nearly two centuries later, these illustrations have lost none of their charm.
Available (surely not for long!) from one of our specialist dealers at Shirehall Plain Antiques Centre, Holt.
