Words on Wood (WOW) Lanzarote is a kitchen table enterprise in the truest sense, designing and producing entirely handcrafted decorative signs for the home, office or outdoor space right here on the island. The perfect stocking filler, wedding or office gift, the ‘shabby chic’ signs can made in any size, from the very small, or, for those who really have something to say, the grandiose.

With every sign made to order in the workshop, customers can also choose from a vast array of colours, themes, finishes, shapes and styles, meaning that the possibilities really are almost endless.

The business is the brainchild of Leah Grange, who has been resident on the island for a number of years and saw a niche in the market for high quality, affordable gifts that can be personalised - as she puts it “down to the last letter”, and yet, are still made from start to finish using artisan methods.

With every single sign made to order, the WOW customer can be assured of a gift (even if its to themselves!) that won’t be found in any of the ‘bucket and spade’ shops that are so prolific on the island, and of course, as every stage of the production is carried out in-house, the quality is also sure to....well, wow!

After an order is placed, every sign is produced entirely by hand - without a stencils, template, sticker or stamp in sight. These are truly one-off and artisan products. “This aspect of the business is SO important to me”, notes Leah. “It’s the founding principle of what WOW is all about - high quality items, with every component crafted, by us, in the workshop. So yes, the lettering is painted by hand. The wood is sawn by hand. The plaques are put together by hand. This is fundamental to who we are, and this won’t change”.

The demand for gifts with the personal touch is one that has never gone away, and WOW Lanzarote certainly ticks that box. But perhaps even more pertinent is the current growing global awareness of a need to make careful use of precious natural resources, as well as drastically cutting down on our carbon footprint; to reuse and recycle wherever possible.

WOW Lanzarote makes a concerted effort to be a part of this movement, with every sign incorporating materials from resources that can already be found around us. There are ‘pre-loved’ or ‘upcycled’ items worked into each and every piece - meaning that not only are they created in a conscious effort to reduce unnecessary waste - but the WOW customer can be assured that they have a unique design that will never be exactly replicated.

“We’ve got big plans ahead of us, and a lot of exciting in-house collections to roll out in the near future”, says Leah, “but of course, we’re always ready to hear ideas from our customers and work in whatever ideas and themes they want to see in their WOW sign. If they have a clear idea of what they want in mind, we’re only too happy to paint that for them - or we can suggest something for them if they’re totally stuck!”
