This weekend's work was carding to make braids.

There's Shetland from Scotland, Jacob's & mule from within 5 miles of home and alpaca from within 20 miles!

I'm happy to support our local wool growers and pay more than shearing costs. Some are just happy it's going to be used and not burnt, just to dispose of it!

The Jacob's & mule is likely going to make peg loom rugs/ seat pads

The Shetland and alpaca are much finer fibers and may get blended with a touch of silk for next-to-skin softness.

I'm starting on my dyeing journey, but having fun making my own dye recipe book.

If there's a colour you want, in a fibre blend I can make, let me know! No promises yet, but I'll give it a shot!

This alpaca is Ariel who lives near Stamford.

First thing, lay the fleece out and see what we've got.

Take off any super dirty bits. Ariel was pretty clean and the shearer had skirted well. Check for bugs, and

Then a rough grade of the fibre, the really nice stuff for yarns but the rougher stuff can be used in home wares or for the garden.

Check for second cuts, where the staples have been caught twice
