Our Story

Hi my name is Graham aka “PapaBear” I live in Ross-shire, I started looking into keeping bees. I watched videos to see if this was something that I really wanted to do after getting attacked by hornet’s when I was 7 years old, which was not very nice as you could imagine.

After some months I looked into joining a local beekeeping club and go to a few meetings and one of their beginners courses, and after completing these and seeing the bees that close up and not getting stung I had my suit of armour on “My bees suite” haha I was hooked.

At the end of the summer I received my 1st hive It was a Saturday, I located at a local club just in case I needed some extra help, the very next morning the secretary of the local club called me in the morning and said I have collected a swarm of bees would you like it I of course said yes please. Now I had 2 hives in less than 24hrs and the start of a very enjoyable journey. By the end of that year I was up to 4 full size hives and 2 Poly nucs, the most nerve racking part was my first winter keeping the bees as this was all new to me but with expert help from other bee keepers I managed to get all my bee hives through the winter.

MY HIVES

I started with wooden hives but soon discovered the Poly hive made of polystyrene and from that point there was for me no turning back, the benefits that I seen between the wooden and the poly hive during the winter were very apparent. My bees in the poly hive were double the size and way ahead of the bees in the wooden hive.

I decided that this was something that I wanted to do and expand into a business then Papabear honey was born. It was the spring and the oilseed r**e was just about to flower so it was time to move the bees to the r**e seed my first year trying to make some honey.

In the coming months I managed to turn my 4 main large hives into very BIG hives, these were to me massive, I removed some of the young bees and some frames of brood into mini nucs (small hives) then added some new queens. Within a few months of doing this I was now up to 30 hives, not all of these would be ready to go to the heather but my hive count was on track if all went well in the winter.

In the autumn of 2013 I started processing all the wax that I had collected that year for making some candles but mainly to star our cosmetics side of the business off. We are going to be making lip balms and hand creams, which we hope to ready soon.

2017

We started to Artificially Inseminate our Queens, you need a steady hand to do this. The benefits of this is we now are able to control our mating/breeding program, we have also started to develop our website for Artificially Inseminated queens.
