We are very sad to announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Ruth Black. After a recent diagnosis of cancer she passed away peacefully on St Stephen’s day, 26th December. We are all very greatful to have worked with mum/grandma over the years, and are very lucky to have been taught to sew by such an incredibly talented woman. We will miss her wonderful creative mind and be forever grateful for her kindness and talent which she shared so graciously.

I have been rather remiss about keeping our website up to date, so a lot of items show as out of stock. However, having just finished some of our lovely "Hebridean Hood" hooded Harris Tweed capes, I refreshed that page in the shop section.
There's only room for one image on the website, so here's another - perhaps a bride with a forthcoming winter wedding might like it! It is a natural white Harris Tweed with oatmeal tweed appliqué, pale metallic gold embroidery and a hand-made button. The hood is edged with white sheepskin and lined with pale beige polar fleece.
Other colours available red/black, teal/grey, beige/grey - I can send photos to anyone who is interested.
The shop is fairly well stocked with a variety of wraps and scaves as well as our hats, bags and purses, wallhangings etc.

"Anna Macneil" first started trading 40 years ago. Started by my mother, she designed and made Harris Tweed hats - the kind that are designed to cope with all that our Scottish weather can throw at us. I took over from my mother some 20 odd years ago, but now I am hoping to find someone who might want to take this aspect of the business forward.
If you are interested in taking on a small business that you can run from home with nothing more than a good sewing machine and some space then please get in touch. Email me at [email protected] for more information or to discuss possibilities.
I will be happy to provide full training in how to make these practical and stylish hats.
This would be ideal for anyone located in the Highlands or Islands of Scotland.
For now, all these hats are still available from me and you are welcome to come into The Workshop to try them on and choose your style - or look at the website - and if your choice is shown as "sold" please just contact me to see what other colours are available - or I can make to order in the tweed of your choice.
The Workshop is open by appointment, or whenever you see the doors open - which is most weekdays, and usually between 10am and 4pm - but email or phone to be sure of catching me.

If you order anything now it will be sent out in the New Year.

If you order anything now it will be sent out in the New Year.

The Workshop is now closed for the Christmas holidays.
Thanks to all who have visited us in this last year.

Until Easter we will be open by appointment only, although if the door is open and the lights are on, you are welcome to come in. I hope to do a lot of working from home to save on heating and driving, so please do call ahead of your visit or you might find us closed.

We had lovely weather a week or two back, but now we are well and truly into autumn. It was blowing a hoolie today, so definitely time to look out the warm clothing. And if you want to be outdoors, try one of our warm and cosy hats.

Today I got a lovely email from Carolyn telling me that she had bought one of our Morag hats on a recent visit to Orkney and how pleased she is with it. Here's what she said:

"I just wanted to get in touch to tell you how much I love my hat!

"My family and I came to Scotland in August, working our way up to Orkney to visit some friends. On our first day in Orkney we went to Skara Brae and I fell in love with one of your hats. I didn’t really have a plan to spend any money and agonised over whether I should/shouldn’t/should etc. But I kept coming back to it, and in the end we left Skara Brae together. For the rest of the holiday, and since I’ve been home, every time I’ve put it on I’ve told my family how much I love my hat. It’s so warm and cosy and just a great shape. It’s perfect."

And on Saturday I had a visit from Catherine who fell in love with one of our buttoned wraps.
https://www.annamacneil.scot/shop-wraps.php
It needed lengthening and the button moving a bit to get a good fit, but I was able to do it while she waited - and as she was waiting she rummaged through my Harris Tweed scraps

and filled a bag. I am not sure what she is going to make with her selection but she left happy.
